• Jon Singleton homers, plates three in victory
Jon Singleton went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBI on Thursday in the Astros’ win over the Guardians.

Advice: Singleton took Guardians lefty starter Logan Allen deep into the sixth inning with a go-ahead blast, his second round-tripper of the season. The 32-year-old journeyman also added an RBI sacrifice fly in the ensuing frame to cap off an eight-run offensive night for Houston’s lineup. He’s taken over as the Astros’ primary first baseman with José Abreu jettisoned to the minors and figures to at least continue hitting for some over-the-fence pop if he’s going to play everyday. • Spencer Arrighetti lasts 5 2/3 Thursday in no-decision
Spencer Arrighetti allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Guardians.

Advice: It’s the deepest Arrighetti has worked into a contest since being called up last month from Triple-A Sugar Land. The 24-year-old top pitching prospect struck out six batters, and also handed out three free passes, throwing a career-high 94 pitches (62 strikes) in this one. He’s made some definite strides over his last two outings on the heels of a rocky debut back on April 10. He’s slated to take the ball on Wednesday in a tough road matchup against the Yankees. • Logan Allen serves up homer in loss to Astros
Logan Allen was charged with three runs (two earned) over 5 2/3 innings on Thursday in a loss to the Astros.

Advice: Allen was tagged for seven hits, including a go-ahead two-run shot by Jon Singleton before departing in the sixth inning. He notched five strikeouts and only issued one walk. He mustered only 10 swinging strikes and finished with a lackluster 21 percent CSW. He’ll bring an inflated 5.11 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 31/12 K/BB ratio across 37 innings (seven starts) into a home outing on Tuesday against the division-rival Tigers. Rotoworld 53 minutes ago

  • Checkup coming soon
McLain (shoulder) is about a week away from a follow-up appointment that will give the Reds a better idea on his timetable, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: If all goes well with his exam, McLain could start working out at the Reds' spring training facility in Arizona. He doesn't have an official return date yet. "It's still way too early to determine a time when he would get back to us, but the goal would still be early August ideally," manager David Bell said. Rotowire.com Today, 6:43 pm

  • Could return Friday
The Reds expect Stephenson (hand) to return Friday against the Orioles, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: Stephenson is hitting .231/.338/.415 with three homers and 10 RBI, but his Statcast metrics (20.4% barrel rate, 93.4 mph average exit velocity) suggest better results could be forthcoming. Moreover, Stephenson has been considerably better than his backup Luke Maile, who is hitting just .163/.250/.256 so far on the season. Rotowire.com Today, 6:23 pm
  • Sem Robberse shines in advance of potential call up
Cardinals RHP prospect Sem Robberse struck out six and allowed one run over six innings on Thursday for Triple-A Memphis.

Advice: Robberse boasts a sublime 1.77 ERA and 35/7 K/BB ratio across 35 2/3 innings (six starts) for Triple-A Memphis and appears to be in line to fill the vacant spot in St. Louis’ starting rotation on Tuesday against the Mets. The unheralded 22-year-old righty doesn’t throw hard, but he’s certainly done enough to at least earn a spot start for the Cardinals with Steven Matz (back) likely to end up on the injured list. • Kyle Hendricks sharp in Double-A rehab start
Kyle Hendricks (back) struck out seven and allowed two runs over five innings on Thursday in a minor league rehab start for Double-A Tennessee.

Advice: Hendricks threw 70 pitches (52 strikes) in this one and might be ready to rejoin Chicago’s starting rotation next week without another rehab outing. The 34-year-old righty landed on the injured list in late April with a relatively minor lower back issue. Rotoworld Today, 5:53 pm

  • Back down to Triple-A
Walston was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Thursday.

Advice: It was a brief stint for Walston, who was recalled by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. He threw for 3.2 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five. The move corresponds with Arizona acquiring right-hander Matt Bowman from the Twins on Thursday, while Merrill Kelly (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day IL. Rotowire.com Today, 5:37 pm
  • Braves acquire reliever Jimmy Herget from Angels
Braves acquired RHP Jimmy Herget from the Angels for cash considerations.

Advice: Herget bolsters Atlanta’s relief depth after being designated for assignment last weekend by the Angels. The 30-year-old righty failed to make Los Angeles’ season-opening roster after making 92 appearances in the big leagues over the previous three seasons. Rotoworld Today, 5:37 pm
