    • Zach Eflin (back) likely to return this week
Zach Eflin (back) threw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Sunday without any issues and afterwards declared himself “ready to go”.

Advice: The 30-year-old right-hander is expected to rejoin the Rays’ rotation this week, perhaps on Wednesday against the Marlins in Miami. Prior to landing on the injured list with inflammation in his lower back, Eflin had registered a 4.12 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 44/4 K/BB ratio over 59 innings of work. Rotoworld Today, 5:36 am

    • Checks boxes in bullpen session
Eflin (back) threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Sunday, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Sunday's session was Eflin's second bullpen in the last four days. He threw two simulated innings and came away feeling good. The Rays haven't confirmed a date for Eflin's return from the 15-day injured list, but he could be activated as soon as Wednesday to start in the Rays' series finale in Miami. • Solid in no-decision
Ragans pitched six innings in a no-decision Sunday against San Diego, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks. He struck out six.

Advice: Ragans was strong yet again Sunday, yielding two earned runs or fewer for the fourth consecutive start. During that span, the 26-year-old has recorded a robust 1.13 ERA and 32:8 K:BB in 24 innings. The hard-throwing southpaw induced 14 swinging strikes Sunday and has shown an impressive ability to miss bats this season, posting 10.97 K/9 thanks to a 15.0 percent swinging strike rate that ranks in the 95th percentile. Ragans will look to do more of the same in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend against Seattle. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:14 pm
    • Cole Ragans pitches well in no decision
Cole Ragans allowed one run on five hits in six innings in a no-decision against the Padres on Sunday.

Advice: The left-hander struck out six and walked two on the day while recording 14 whiffs on 46 swings for a 30 percent whiff rate and 27 percent CSW. He had some issues finding the strike zone with his off-speed pitches, but the induced whiffs outside of the zone and the Padres were unable to square him up. He now has a 3.21 ERA on the season and is a must-start every week, including next week against the Mariners. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:34 pm
    • Cole Ragans to start on Sunday against Padres
Cole Ragans will start on Sunday against the Padres.

Advice: Ragans will take the ball on regular rest for Sunday’s series finale against San Diego with Brady Singer needing some extra rest as he continues to recover from an illness. Royals manager Matt Quatraro told reporters Saturday that Singer could slot into the rotation for Wednesday’s contest against the Guardians. Rotoworld Saturday, 10:39 am
    • Hammered by Mets
Montgomery (3-3) yielded eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and three walks over four innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Mets.

Advice: Montgomery had a 3-0 lead before taking the mound Friday but quickly squandered it by coughing up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. He allowed another run in the second and three more in the fourth. After producing a pair of quality starts in his first two outings with Arizona, Montgomery has registered a rough 6.61 ERA over his last six starts. He now owns a 5.48 ERA with a lackluster 28:15 K:BB through 44.1 innings. Montgomery's next start is lined up to be at home against the Giants. Rotowire.com Saturday, 4:42 am
    • Jordan Montgomery hit hard by Mets
Jordan Montgomery allowed six earned runs across four innings in a loss to the Mets on Friday. He struck out just four while walking three batters and giving up nine hits.

Advice: Montgomery’s poor season continued on Friday. The Diamondbacks gifted him a 3-0 lead before he took the mound and still managed to cough it up before the third inning. Once again, his sinker was hit incredibly hard - the Mets had an average exit velocity of 97 MPH off the pitch - and he wound up trashing it as the game went on in favor of more four-seam fastballs and curveballs. His ERA rose to 5.48 in the loss. Rotoworld Friday, 7:09 pm
    • Astros don’t provide update on Cristian Javier
Astros’ manager Joe Espada did not give an update on right-handers Cristian Javier and Jose Urquidy on Friday, aside from saying that he’s giving both pitchers space while they are awaiting second opinions.

Advice: If that’s not discouraging enough, Espada also refused to comment when asked if the pitchers’ UCL’s were intact. Lovely. The Astros should provide full updates on the status of both hurlers in the coming days once they get their second opinions, but it doesn’t sound good. Rotoworld Friday, 2:16 pm

    • Zach Eflin throws bullpen session Thursday
Zach Eflin (back) threw a bullpen session on Thursday.

Advice: Eflin threw 26 pitches before Thursday’s series finale against the Athletics. He has another bullpen session scheduled for this Sunday. If all goes well, Eflin could return to the Rays rotation as early as next week. Rotoworld Friday, 6:14 am
