• Easton Lucas designated for assignment
Athletics designated LHP Easton Lucas for assignment.

Advice: Lucas was optioned to the minors on Tuesday and now has been designated for assignment to make room for Brandon Bielak on the 40-man roster. The 27-year-old has allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in 3 2/3 MLB innings this year with six strikeouts and three walks. He’s unlikely to be claimed by another team. • A’s acquire Bielak from Astros for cash
Astros traded RHP Brandon Bielak to the Athletics for cash considerations.

Advice: Bielak was designated for assignment last week and will now find a new home in Oakland. It’s a good landing spot for him in terms of innings, and he should help Oakland since he has a solid 4.65 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and 155/85 K/BB ratio across 191 2/3 innings (70 appearances, 21 starts) since 2020. Given that the Athletic’s rotation is banged up, it might not be a surprise to see them try to stretch Bielak out to start again. However, he remains off the fantasy radar. • Traded to Oakland
The Athletics acquired Bielak from the Astros on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Advice: Bielak had been designated for assignment and will wind up staying in the American League West. He's out of minor-league options, so the Athletics will need to add him to their active roster. Bielak holds a 5.71 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 17.1 relief innings this season. While he's pitched exclusively out of the bullpen in 2024, the 28-year-old has plenty of past starting experience, so he could be an option for an Oakland rotation that needs arms. • Removed from 40-man roster
The Athletics designated Lucas for assignment Thursday.

Advice: Lucas was pushed off the Athletics' 40-man roster after Oakland acquired right-hander Brandon Bielak via trade from Houston on Thursday. The former was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas earlier this week but had made three appearances for the big club this season, giving up six earned runs on eight hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. • Rehab assignment on tap Friday
LeMahieu (foot) is in line to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Friday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.

Advice: LeMahieu has already joined Somerset, but he will first go through a full workout Thursday and, assuming that goes off without a hitch, will begin playing in games Friday. The veteran infielder had to have his initial rehab assignment last month halted after just one inning due to ongoing issues with his right foot, but he's now ready to try again. Since he's missed so much time, the expectation is that LeMahieu will probably need at least a handful of rehab games before rejoining the Yankees' active roster. Rotowire.com 33 minutes ago

  • Keibert Ruiz feels he needs “a better plan”
According to Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports, Keibert Ruiz is going back to the drawing board to try and break out of his slump.

Advice: It’s been a rough start to the season for Ruiz, who missed two weeks because of a nasty case of the flu and now has put up a .393 OPS in 90 plate appearances, which among the 270 major leaguers who have taken at least 90 plate appearances so far this season, ranks dead-last in baseball. “I’ve got to sit down, relax, think a little bit better and swing at better pitches,” said Ruiz. “A better plan. And just stay with it. Don’t go out of the plan. Don’t chase for results. Just have a plan, and whatever happens, happens.” Ruiz is currently chasing pitches out of the zone less than before and making far more contact than last year. He’s also pulling the ball at the same rate and swinging and missing less, so it might not be what pitches he’s swinging at as much as it’s what he’s trying to do on those pitches. • Records third steal Wednesday
Raley went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a stolen base in a win over the Royals on Wednesday.

Advice: Raley delivered a timely single in the eighth inning that plated pinch runner Leonardo Rivas, extending the Mariners' lead back to two runs after Bobby Witt had brought the Royals within one in the top half of the frame. Raley's multi-hit effort was an extension of a torrid stretch at the plate for the offseason addition, one that's seen him generate a .435 average and 1.219 OPS over the last seven games. • Doubles in IL return
Canzone (shoulder) went 1-for-3 with a double and a run in a win over the Royals on Wednesday.

Advice: Activated from the injured list earlier in the day, Canzone helped give the Mariners some key breathing room by doubling in the seventh and then coming home with Seattle's third run. Canzone was seeing his first big-league game action in just over a month, having last played April 14. Now apparently back to health after playing a full game in left field Wednesday, Canzone should be a fixture in the lineup against right-handed pitching moving forward. Rotowire.com 50 minutes ago
  • Jose Miranda not in the lineup on Thursday
Jose Miranda is not in the Twins lineup on Thursday against the Yankees.

Advice: Willi Castro will shift from center field to third base and Manuel Margot will get the start in center and bat eighth in the order. Miranda had been playing regularly, but he’s now sat in two of the last four games as he’s gone 10-for-39 (.256) in 11 games in May with no home runs, six strikeouts, and two walks. He’s likely not losing his job, but he’s also not forcing his way into the lineup every day, and on a team that likes to platoon as much as the Twins do, that could be an issue.
