    José Abreu went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Tuesday in a loss to the Mariners.

    Advice: We’d understand the Astros giving Abreu one more shot at Jon Singleton’s expense, and we’d understand setting up a platoon that sees Singleton play versus righties and Abreu against lefties. What we can’t understand is playing both guys, when it means putting both Chas McCormick and Mauricio Dubón on the bench and taking a defensive downgrade with Yordan Alvarez in left field (and increasing the injury risk for Alvarez). Still, that’s exactly what the Astros have done in both games since Abreu returned from exile. It’s a bad strategy, and the team has paid the price the last two days.     Bryant went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Tuesday's 13-7 loss to the Guardians.

    Advice: Bryant has gone 6-for-28 (.214) over eight games since he returned from a back injury. His homer Tuesday was his first extra-base hit in that span. The 32-year-old is slashing a meager .173/.303/.280 with two homers, nine RBI, four runs scored and two doubles over 21 contests this season.     Manzardo went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored in Tuesday's 13-7 win over the Rockies.

    Advice: Manzardo has hit safely in eight of his last nine games, and he has an extra-base hit in six of those contests. The top prospect is at a .236/.276/.382 slash line with no home runs, four RBI, four runs scored and eight doubles over 58 plate appearances. He's had some struggles adjusting to major-league pitching with a 2:17 BB:K over his first 18 games. Manzardo may be running out of time to make an impression, as the Guardians will need to make a corresponding move to activate Steven Kwan (hamstring) from the injured list later in the week.     Fry went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run, a stolen base and three total runs scored in Tuesday's 13-7 win over the Rockies.

    Advice: Fry has a pair of three-hits games over his last nine contests, going 13-for-26 (.500) with four homers, three steals and 11 RBI in that span. The utility man is on another level lately, though he's been strong throughout the campaign with a .357/.492/.622 slash line, seven homers, 23 RBI, 26 runs scored and four steals over 128 plate appearances. He's started three straight games in left field, but that avenue into the lineup will close when Steven Kwan (hamstring) returns from the injured list.   • Josh Naylor homers twice, drives in five in win
    Josh Naylor hit two homers to drive in five runs and lead the Guardians to a 13-7 win over the Rockies on Tuesday.

    Advice: We’ve liked Naylor as a sleeper pick to lead the AL in RBI, but José Ramírez, batting one spot ahead of him, just isn’t cooperating thus far; Ramírez leads the majors with 56, while Naylor is third in the AL with 40. We’re still not sure whether Naylor has really gotten hot yet. On the one hand, his 15 homers in 52 games are just two fewer than he hit in 121 games last season.   • David Fry goes 3-for-3, hits three-run homer
    David Fry went 3-for-3 and hit a three-run homer Tuesday against the Rockies.

    Advice: Fry wasn’t expected to make the Guardians out of spring training and then wasn’t slated to play against righties once he did make the team, but all he’s done so far is hit .357/.492/.622 with seven homers and four steals in 128 plate appearances.     Naylor went 2-for-4 with two home runs, a walk, five RBI and three total runs scored in Tuesday's 13-7 win over the Rockies.

    Advice: Naylor entered Tuesday 0-for-14 over his last three games, and he hadn't logged a multi-hit effort since May 9. Consider the slump busted, as the first baseman tagged starter Ryan Feltner for a two-run blast in the fifth inning before taking reliever Matt Carasiti deep with a three-run shot in the eighth. Naylor is already up to 15 homers through 52 contests this year, just five long balls shy of matching his career high from 2022.     Jake Cronenworth went 0-for-4 on Tuesday, leaving him 12-for-56 in his last 15 games.

    Advice: Given his obvious decline in 2022 and ’23, Cronenworth was a very nice surprise to begin this year, batting .285/.349/.503 in his first 39 games.     Busch went 2-for-4 with a walk, a solo home run and two total RBI in Tuesday's 6-3, 10-inning win over the Brewers.

    Advice: Busch connected for his eighth home run of the season in the third inning, but it was only his second of the month as he's slowed down some after a hot start. Across 23 games in May, the first baseman is batting just .206 after hitting .266 in March and April.
