• Cleared to start Friday
Hicks (side) is listed as the Giants' probable starting pitcher for Friday's game against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

Advice: Hicks contended with side tightness during his most recent outing against the Pirates last Saturday, when he struck out a season-high nine over six innings while allowing one earned run on five hits and no walks. The injury apparently didn't hinder him during his between-starts bullpen session, so he's on track to take the hill for the seventh time this season Friday. After pitching exclusively in relief between stops with St. Louis and Toronto in 2023, Hicks has performed even better than the Giants could have imagined after signing him to a four-year, $44 million deal this winter with the plan of converting him to a full-time starting role. Through his first six turns through the rotation, Hicks has delivered two wins to go with a 1.59 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 27:10 K:BB in 34 innings. Rotowire.com 12 minutes ago

  • Another start on tap
Wesneski is slated to start Friday's series opener against the Brewers in Chicago.

Advice: He'll be making his second straight turn through the rotation after Jordan Wicks (forearm) recently joined Kyle Hendricks (back) and Justin Steele (hamstring) on the 15-day injured list. In his first start of the season this past Sunday in Boston, Wesneski gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out three over four innings. • Camilo Doval picks up sixth save against Red Sox
Camilo Doval struck out a batter in a scoreless inning of work while picking up a save Thursday against the Red Sox.

Advice: Doval is now up to six saves on the season. The right-hander didn’t allow a hit while picking up a strikeout, and he pounded the zone with 11-of-14 pitches going for strikes. Doval has had some shaky moments in 2024, but the right-hander remains locked into a closing role for a team that should provide plenty of opportunites. Rotoworld Today, 2:16 pm

  • Josh Winckowski surrenders one run over 4 1/3
Josh Winckowski held the Giants to one run while going 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision Thursday.

Advice: He walked two and wasn’t able to pick up a strikeout. It was far from a dominant start for Winckowski, but the 25-year-old was mostly effective even without much swing-and-miss. The only run came on a solo homer from Mike Yastrzemski in the third. Winckowski has been able to get the job done in his last two starts, but he has yet to go deep enough to qualify for a victory. That along with the quality of the Atlanta lineup makes him a risky streaming option against the Bravos next week. Rotoworld Today, 2:16 pm

  • Edwin Díaz hurls two scoreless innings vs. Cubs
Edwin Díaz hurled two scoreless innings against the Cubs on Thursday.

Advice: It comes in a non-save situation, but fantasy managers who roster Díaz get to see their ERA drop with the scoreless frames. He also picked up a pair of strikeouts, and that improves his K/BB to 19/4 over 12 2/3 innings. There really hasn’t been much — if any — rust to shake off for Díaz after missing all of 2023. • Steven Matz (back) unlikely to make next start
Steven Matz (back) is unlikely to make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the White Sox.

Advice: The interesting wrinkle here is that the Cardinals decision to bump up Kyle Gibson and Miles Mikolas creates an opening on Tuesday against the Mets. The most likely candidate to fill that void would be pitching prospect Sem Robberse, who would be taking the ball on regular rest, and has been excellent this season for Triple-A Memphis. It’s a storyline worth monitoring this weekend. Rotoworld Today, 2:00 pm

  • Peter Lambert can’t get out of fourth against MIA
Peter Lambert went 3 1/3 innings while allowing four runs in a no-decision against the Marlins on Thursday.

Advice: Lambert was fortunate to get a no-decision with the Rockies providing just enough offensive support to keep him from the loss. The 27-year-old allowed five hits with three walks against three strikeouts in a middling — at best — effort against a mediocre Miami lineup. Lambert will not be a recommended option next week against the Giants. Rotoworld Today, 1:58 pm

  • Clears waivers
Pinto cleared waivers Thursday and was sent outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Pinto lost his spot on the 40-man roster Sunday after turning in a 10.97 ERA and 2.25 WHIP across 10.2 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander will now head to Triple-A in an effort to get back on track, but a return to the majors this year isn't likely, barring a drastic turnaround. Rotowire.com Today, 1:56 pm
  • Shaky vs. Marlins
Lambert did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Marlins, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out three.

Advice: The Marlins got to Lambert quickly, scoring twice in the opening inning before tacking on runs in the third and the fourth. The 27-year-old Lambert's struggled in his two starts this year, allowing 10 runs in 6.1 innings. He's fared better out of the bullpen, however, pinching to a 1.88 ERA over 14.1 innings in relief. Still, the right-hander figures to remain in the rotation while Kyle Freeland (elbow) is sidelined. Lambert's currently scheduled for a home start against the Giants in his next outing.
