    • A’s asking price ‘steep’ in Mason Miller talks
      The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports the Athletics’s asking price for flame-throwing closer Mason Miller is steep.

      Advice: Rosenthal adds that a team source indicates no team has come close to meeting Oakland’s astronomical asking price. The 25-year-old starter-turned-closer has been phenomenal this season, with a microscopic 1.10 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 33/4 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings (13 appearances). It’s entirely possible that no team will come close to coughing up enough prospect capital to make a deal happen, but Miller figures to be at the epicenter of rumors leading up to the trade deadline later this summer.     • Earns win Wednesday
      Clase (2-1) earned the extra-inning win Wednesday over the Tigers, striking out one without allowing a hit or a walk in a scoreless inning.

      Advice: Clase was sharp in the 10th inning despite a fielder's choice and a wild pitch, and the Guardians completed their comeback on a walk-off Brayan Rocchio single in the bottom of the frame. This outing extended Clase's scoreless streak to five innings, and he's gone 12.1 innings without giving up an earned run.     • Stellar in non-save scenario
      Miller fired two perfect innings during which he recorded four strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader against the Rangers on Wednesday.

      Advice: Miller had last taken the hill May 1, so manager Mark Kotsay opted to give his closer some much-needed work with the Athletics up by five runs. The extended layoff didn't seem to faze Miller in the least, as he located 24 of 32 pitches for strikes in a relatively efficient showing. The hard-throwing right-hander lowered his ERA and WHIP to 1.10 and 0.67, respectively, and with the Athletics much more competitive than expected thus far, Miller's prospects for save opportunities over the long term are brighter than when the season began, despite the recent stretch of inactivity.       Sale (5-1) earned the win over the Red Sox on Wednesday, hurling six shutout innings while allowing six hits and one walk. He struck out 10.

      Advice: Sale allowed at least one hit in each of his first five innings of work but was consistently able to work his way through it without sustaining any damage. He logged just one 1-2-3 inning, which came in the sixth, while fanning a season-high 10 batters on the night. The veteran lefty has now logged quality starts in three of his last four outings and hasn't produced fewer than six strikeouts in any of his seven starts this season.       Chris Sale was utterly dominant with six shutout innings and 10 strikeouts and picked up the win in the 5-0 victory over the Red Sox on Wednesday.

      Advice: Sale lowered his ERA on the season to 2.95 with the excellent outing. He certainly showed the Red Sox what they’re missing after trading him last offseason. The win was Sale’s fifth in seven starts this season. His 52 strikeouts are in the top 10 among qualified starting pitchers. Sale is set to take on the Chicago Cubs at home next week.     • Kevin Ginkel struggles in save chance on Wednesday
      Kevin Ginkel struggled in a save chance against the Reds on Wednesday night, giving up a run on two hits and a walk while recording only one out.

      Advice: Ginkel came on with a two-run lead to protect, but things got interesting in a hurry as Jake Fraley drew a walk, Jeimer Candelario smacked a one-out single and TJ Friedl tacked on an RBI single. That caused manager Torey Lovullo to have a quick hook, getting Joe Mantiply to come out and finish the job. With Paul Sewald back, Ginkel wasn’t going to hold down the closer’s gig any longer, but if he did still have any leash in the role, it may have evaporated on Wednesday.       Chris Bassitt pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball and struck out six Wednesday as the Blue Jays bested the Phillies 5-3.

      Advice: The Jays wanted a little extra from Bassitt today with Yimi Garcia still unavailable and a tired bullpen after Tuesday’s 10-1 loss, and they got it, even though Bassitt didn’t get through seven as he would have liked. Bassitt struck out six and walked two. The win makes him 3-5 with a 5.06 ERA ahead of next week’s outing against the Orioles. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:10 pm
       
    • Strong effort vs. Phillies
      Bassitt (3-5) earned the win Wednesday over the Phillies, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out six.

      Advice: It was an impressive outing from Bassitt, as the right-hander limited a powerful Phillies offense to just three hits to snap a three-start losing streak. It's been an inconsistent start to the year for Bassitt, though he seems to be rounding into form of late, delivering back-to-back quality starts. He lowered his ERA to 5.06 with a 1.55 WHIP and 40:20 K:BB across his first 42.2 innings this year.     • Remains shut down
      Rangers general manager Chris Young said Wednesday that Scherzer (back) will remain shut down from throwing for the next few days due to a right thumb and forearm issue, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

      Advice: Scherzer has been on the 15-day injured list all season while completing his recovery from Dec. 15 surgery to address a herniated disc in his back, but it's his pitching arm that has presented complications for him coming out of his first rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock back on April 24. Young said that Scherzer won't resume ramping up again until the tightness and discomfort in his arm completely subsides, so the veteran right-hander still looks to be multiple weeks away from being ready to return from the IL.
