Law (3-2) took the loss Thursday against the Tigers, coughing up four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of relief. He struck out one.

Advice: The journeyman right-hander wasted a strong effort by Patrick Corbin, giving up a solo shot to Justyn-Henry Malloy in the sixth inning before the wheels came off completely for Law in the seventh. He's handled a versatile role out of the Nationals' bullpen this season, recording six holds and three wins in 33 appearances with a 3.48 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 41:13 K:BB through 41.1 innings, but the heavy workload may be catching up to him -- Law's been scored up in four of his last eight trips to the mound, and he's been taken deep twice in his last three games. • Collects fifth hold
Faucher struck out one in 1.1 perfect innings of relief to Thursday to record his fifth hold of the season in a loss to the Mets.

Advice: The 28-year-old right-hander continues to give the Marlins solid innings while seeing occasional high-leverage work. Faucher has been scored upon only twice in his last 12 appearances, posting a 2.38 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB through 11.1 innings over that stretch. JT Chargois' return from the IL figures to bump him down another spot in the bullpen pecking order, but if Miami cleans house at the deadline and ships out relievers like Tanner Scott, there could be an opening for Faucher in the late-inning crew. • Takes third loss
Grove (4-3) was charged with the loss against the Rangers on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits over one inning.

Advice: Grove failed to retire three of the first five batters he faced, which led to two runs coming home for Texas in the first inning. That would prove to be the difference as the Dodgers' offense managed to generate only one run on the night, leaving Grove with his first loss since May 10. The right-hander has now allowed at least one run and multiple hits in each of his last two appearances. He's also failed to record a strikeout in three straight outings. • Kyle Freeland (elbow) begins rehab assignment
Kyle Freeland (elbow) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday.

Advice: Freeland allowed one run in three innings and threw 38 pitchers. He gave up three hits, walked none and struck out four. Freeland will need at least another start or two in the minors before returning to the Rockies’ rotation. Rotoworld Today, 5:45 am

  • Throws to batters
Mahle (elbow) threw 30-to-40 pitches in a live batting practice session Thursday, Kenndi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: This was Mahle's second live BP session. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said the right-hander showed good command and velocity. He'll take a week off before throwing more live BP, then Mahle will go on a rehab assignment. Rotowire.com Today, 5:32 am

  • Tagged with seventh loss
Canning (2-7) took the loss against the Diamondbacks on Thursday, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk over six innings while striking out three.

Advice: Canning got himself into trouble early after allowing two of the first three batters to reach base, which Christian Walker would capitalize on with a three-run shot to left field as Arizona took the lead over the Angels. The right-hander would allow only two hits from that point on, though one of those hits was a second long ball off the bat of Walker, putting Los Angeles in a 4-0 hole. Canning had not allowed more than three runs in either of his last seven outings coming in and it marked only the third time this season in which he's surrendered multiple home runs. He has, however, managed to go at least six innings in three consecutive starts. Rotowire.com Today, 5:10 am
  • Goes seven frames in spot start
Hancock allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one batter over seven innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Thursday.

Advice: Hancock was called up from the minors Thursday morning so that he could make his first MLB start in over a month. The right-hander rose to the challenge, tossing seven innings for the first time this season and limiting Chicago to a pair of third-inning runs. As usual, strikeouts weren't a big part of his outing -- he has just 24 punchouts across 41.1 big-league innings this season -- but he nonetheless picked up his fourth quality start. Hancock could remain in the rotation if Bryan Woo (forearm) is forced to miss additional time, but that may not happen given that Woo's MRI on Wednesday came back clean. Rotowire.com Today, 1:18 am
  • Mediocre performance in defeat
Medina (0-2) took the loss against Minnesota on Thursday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three batters over five innings.

Advice: Medina had much better control after issuing five walks across 4.2 frames in his previous start, but his overall stat line wasn't significantly improved. The right-hander took his second straight loss Thursday, giving up a season-high eight hits while striking out just three batters. Medina looked great in his first start of the campaign June 2 against Atlanta with no earned runs allowed over 5.2 innings, but he's yielded 10 earned runs across 9.2 frames since.
