    • Removed from 40-man roster
The Athletics designated Diaz for assignment Thursday.

Advice: At multiple points in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Diaz looked to bea mainstay in Oakland's lineup, but he failed to make the Opening Day roster coming out of spring training and struggled to get going at a hitter-friendly environment at Triple-A Las Vegas, slashing just .204/.288/.327 over 111 plate appearances. He's still just 23 years old, so Diaz could draw interest on waivers from a team that thinks it might be able to help him tap back into the promise he displayed earlier in his career. • Shane Baz continues to improve in rehab starts
Shane Baz allowed one run on three hits in four innings for Triple-A Durham on Wednesday night.

Advice: More importantly, Baz was up to 76 pitches and induced 14 whiffs in just four innings on the day. He had a 66 percent strike right but his overall command still needs some work, walking three batters and hitting one. His stuff has graded out above-average but command is often the last thing to come back after Tommy John surgery, so we’ll hope that he can iron that out in his next starts. He may have one more rehab start before being activated off his rehab assignment, but we shouldn’t expect more than five innings in his few first outings. Rotoworld Today, 9:50 am

    • Rare multi-hit effort Wednesday
Gelof went 2-for-5 with a game-tying RBI single in an extra-innings loss to the Rockies on Wednesday.

Advice: After knotting the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth with his timely knock, Gelof also drove in Shea Langeliers with a double-play groundout in the 12th but didn't get credited with an RBI since the Athletics' backstop was the extra-inning-opening runner. Nevertheless, Gelfo did extend his on-base streak to four games with his multi-hit effort, his first since April 21. Despite the recent modest success, Gelof's slash line sits at a paltry .192/.260/.308 across 132 plate appearances, with a strikeout rate that's shot up from a rookie figure of 27.3 percent to 34.1 percent partly to blame for his struggles. • Lands on IL with strained wrist
The Athletics placed Ruiz on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a strained left wrist, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Advice: It's not clear when or how Ruiz suffered the injury, but he'll be sidelined for at least the next week and a half. Ruiz had made just two starts over Oakland's last 13 games and is only 2-for-19 with 10 strikeouts at the plate in May. Rotowire.com Today, 9:45 am

    • Earns first career save
Fernandez allowed a run on two hits over one inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Orioles. He did not walk or strike out a batter.

Advice: Fernandez allowed a run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, but a baserunning blunder by the Orioles' Cedric Mullins took the tying run off base. The save was Fernandez's first of his career, and he got the opportunity because most of the Cardinals' high-leverage relievers pitched earlier Wednesday to finish off Tuesday's suspended game. The rookie right-hander has done alright in a low-leverage role with a 3.48 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB over 20.2 innings while adding one hold and an 0-1 record. He's struggled a little lately with four runs allowed over his last 3.1 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 9:45 am
    • A’s place Esteury Ruiz on IL
A’s placed OF Esteury Ruiz on the 10-day injured list with a strained left wrist.

Advice: There was a lot of celebrating in fantasy baseball circles when Ruiz performed well at Triple-A Las Vegas and hit two home runs in his first games after being recalled in April. However, the 25-year-old is hitting just .200/.270/.382 in 29 games this season with two home runs, five steals, and a 31 percent strikeout rate. He has been battling wrist issues throughout the season but also figures to profile as more of a fourth outfielder due to his low batting average and poor outfield defense. Daz Cameron was called up to take his place on the active roster. Rotoworld Today, 9:42 am

    • Takes first loss Wednesday
Muller (0-1) took the loss in an extra-innings defeat at the hands of the Rockies on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits over one inning.

Advice: Muller was entrusted with preserving a 2-2 tie when he entered in the 12th inning, but he faltered almost immediately by giving up a go-ahead two-run home run to Ryan McMahon with inning-opening runner Jake Cave aboard. Oakland would halve its two-run deficit in the home half of the frame but fall short of knotting the score back up, saddling Muller with his first loss. The southpaw sports a respectable 3.94 ERA and 1.18 WHIP, but he's allowed at least one run in nine of his 12 appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 9:42 am

    • Goes four innings Wednesday
Gibson allowed three unearned runs on five hits and struck out three without walking a batter over four innings in a no-decision versus the Orioles on Wednesday.

Advice: Gibson exited the contest after a rain delay, and the Cardinals got him off the hook for the loss once play resumed. This was the first time in 10 starts he didn't walk a batter, though he was a little shaky with just 50 of 84 pitches thrown for strikes and one wild pitch in the contest. He's at a 3.81 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 46:23 K:BB over 59 innings this season, and he's allowed more than three runs just three times. Gibson is lined up to make his next start at Cincinnati. • A’s designate Jordan Diaz for assignment
A’s designated INF Jordan Diaz for assignment

Advice: Diaz played in 90 games for Oakland in 2023 but did not make the club out of spring and was hitting just .204/.288/.327 in 29 games in Triple-A with two home runs. He doesn’t play strong enough defense at any position, so he will always need to hit above league average in order to crack an MLB roster. Considering he’s only 23 years old, he figures to get a shot with another club but he needs to improve his defense and conditioning if he is to become an MLB regular. Rotoworld Today, 9:40 am
