  • Anthony Volpe homers, steals base in victory
    Anthony Volpe went 2-for-5 with a leadoff homer and also stole a base on Thursday, leading the Yankees to a 5-0 victory over the Twins.

    Advice: Volpe kicked off the contest with a leadoff homer against Twins starter Joe Ryan for his sixth round-tripper of the year. He also picked up his ninth stolen base of the season a couple frames later. The 23-year-old’s power output was a bit diminished at the outset of the year following offseason changes to flatten his swing and implement an all-fields approach, but he’s started to drive the ball a bit more of late with three homers in his last nine contests.   • Bryson Stott gets a day off on Thursday
    Bryson Stott is not in the Phillies’ lineup on Thursday against the Mets.

    Advice: Stott has started 39 of the team’s 44 games so far this season, so this is just a routine day off. Edmundo Sosa will start at shortstop and bat eight while Whit Merrifield will play second base. Since Trea Turner went down with an injury, Merrifield has gotten a lot more playing time, but he’s hitting just .156 in 10 games in May, so there hasn’t been much to write home about.   • Pete Alonso hitting 2nd for Mets
    Pete Alonso will hit second for the Mets on Thursday against the Phillies

    Advice: This is the second straight start for Alonso in the second spot in the order, while Starling Marte moves down the sixth. Carlos Mendoza is clearly trying to jumpstart this Mets offense, and he was with the Yankees as a coach when they hit Aaron Judge second in the lineup, so perhaps he’s trying to recapture some of that magic. Alonso has just a .306 on-base percentage this year, which is the lowest of his career and his RBI opportunities will take a hit with the move out of the cleanup spot, so it’s unclear if this is a great decision.     Angels activated INF/OF Luis Rengifo from the 10-day injured list.

    Advice: The Angels tried to keep Rengifo on the active roster, but after he missed five games, they decided to put him on the injured list last Thursday. A week later, he’s returning to the fold and should likely remain an everyday player for the Angels given how banged up their lineup is.     The Angels optioned Goodrum to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday.

    Advice: Goodrum was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay last Thursday, and he has since gone 0-for-13 in four games with the Angels. He will now return to the minors, making room for Luis Rengifo's (illness) return from the injured list. It's possible Goodrum returns later this year if the Angels continue to struggle with infield depth, but he has proven to be an offensive liability in the major leagues.     The Angels activated Rengifo (illness) from the 10-day injured list Thursday.

    Advice: Rengifo missed the last week and a half with a viral illness which resulted in painful blisters on his feet. He's recovered now, though, and should be back in the lineup when the Angels return to action Friday in Texas against the Rangers.     Goldschmidt went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Angels.

    Advice: Goldschmidt is on a five-game hitting streak, having gone 7-for-23 (.304) with two homers and four RBI in that span. The burst of offense has doubled his homer total for the year to four, and he's up to 15 RBI, 20 runs scored, two stolen bases and three doubles while slashing .206/.291/.300 across 41 contests. Goldschmidt sat out a game just prior to his current streak, so it appears the mental reset is paying off in the short term, though his counting stats are unlikely to improve much if the team around him doesn't collectively start hitting better.
