    • Gets stitches removed
Alvarez had the stitches removed Monday from his surgically repaired left thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Alvarez underwent surgery April 23 to address a torn UCL in the thumb on his glove hand. At the time his surgery was performed, the Mets estimated that Alvarez would need eight weeks to make a full recovery, so he appears unlikely to return from the injured list until around late June. A more precise target date for his return should come into focus once he resumes taking batting practice and performing defensive drills. Rotowire.com Today, 2:56 pm

    • Francisco Alvarez has stitches removed from thumb
Francisco Alvarez had the stitches from his surgically repaired left thumb removed Monday.

Advice: Alvarez is currently with the Mets to take part in the pitcher/catcher meetings according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. The backstop is two weeks into what is expected to be a two-month rehab after undergoing surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb. If all continues to trend well, Alvarez could be back with the Mets around the All-Star break. Rotoworld Today, 2:50 pm

    • Connor Joe batting cleanup for Pirates on Monday
Connor Joe is starting for the Pirates on Monday against the Angels and batting cleanup.

Advice: Joe has now started the last three games and five of the last six. He most often plays against lefties but gets the occasional start against righties as well. The 31-year-old is hitting .290/.372/.460 on the season with three home runs, 14 RBI, and two steals. With the Pirates set to face three lefties this week, Joe could see some more at-bats than usual. Rowdy Tellez and Jack Suwinski will take a seat against left-hander Tyler Anderson with Edward Olivares also in the lineup in right field and batting fifth. Rotoworld Today, 11:39 am

    • Starting at second base Monday
Merrifield will start at second base and bat eighth in Monday's contest against the Giants, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Merrifield's playing time with the Phillies this season has been sparse, but he could see increased reps at second base over the next several weeks on days Bryson Stott slides over to shortstop to cover for the injured Trea Turner (hamstring). The 35-year-old has been solid in 2024 in his limited chances, putting up a .724 OPS with two home runs and three stolen bases across 53 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 9:21 am

    • Merrifield starting at 2B for Phillies on Monday
Whit Merrifield will start at second base for the Phillies on Monday against the Giants.

Advice: Bryson Stott will slide to shortstop to accommodate Merrifield in the starting lineup against a right-handed pitcher. In the first two games without Trea Turner, the Phillies turned to Edmundo Sosa at shortstop and allowed Stott to remain at second base, but Sosa went 2-for-9 in those games, so the team may be looking to see what else can work. Stott didn’t play any shortstop last year with Turner in Philadelphia, but he did play 658 innings there in 2022 and graded out slightly below average. If the Phillies feel that he can handle shortstop again, that could mean extra at-bats for Merrifield, who hasn’t been great to start his career in Philadelphia. Rotoworld Today, 9:06 am

    • Takes loss against Mariners
Hader (1-3) allowed a solo home run and struck out one to take the loss Sunday against the Mariners.

Advice: Hader entered the game in the ninth inning with the score tied 4-4. He retired the first batter he faced but then served up the go-ahead homer to Cal Raleigh. Hader had turned in three consecutive appearances without giving up an earned run prior to Sunday, though he's now been charged with at least one run in six of his 15 appearances. • Jeff McNeil goes 0-for-4 in loss to Rays
Jeff McNeil went 0-for-4 on Sunday and is 1-for-16 in his last four games.

Advice: The NL batting champ when he hit .326 in 2022, McNeil slipped to .270 last year and is at .231 right now. Of course, that’s not coming with a lot of power or many walks, either. The Mets aren’t about to take him out of the lineup with any regularity, but perhaps they should cease using him in left field on those days when they decide someone else should play second base. • Josh Hader yields go-ahead homer in ninth
Josh Hader lost after giving up a go-ahead homer in a tie game Sunday against the Mariners.

Advice: It’s the save situations in which Hader has struggled, but the loss today came after he was asked to preserve a tie. Cal Raleigh’s homer was the second surrendered by Hader in 14 2/3 innings this year. Given that his strikeout rate remains exceptional and his groundball rate is actually considerably higher than usual, we’re still not worried about Hader at all. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:01 pm
    • Earns sixth save
Bednar allowed one hit and struck out one over a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Sunday against the Rockies.

Advice: Bednar allowed a two-out double but otherwise looked sharp for the second consecutive day as he earned his sixth save Sunday, dropping his ERA to 9.69 and WHIP to 1.46 in the process. Despite the scoreless effort, the Pirates' stopper has allowed at least one run in seven of his 15 appearances this season. Pirate fans and fantasy managers alike hope these last two performances against the listless Rockies will serve as a momentum boost for Bednar, who entered the season as one of the top closers in baseball.
