    Advice: Yu Darvish returned from the 15-day injured list and rejoined the Padres rotation earlier this week, but San Diego will still have an opening for Vasquez as its fifth starter after Joe Musgrove (elbow) hit the shelf May 5. Though Vasquez has been largely unimpressive over his seven starts between the big club and Triple-A El Paso this season, he was solid his last time out Tuesday on the road against the Cubs, striking out six while allowing one run over 4.1 innings in a no-decision.     Ryan (2-2) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on six hits over seven innings in a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out seven without walking a batter.

    Advice: A solo shot by Isiah Kiner-Falefa accounted for the only blemish on Ryan's line. The right-hander fired 75 of 104 pitches for strikes in his longest outing of the season, as he produced his fourth straight quality start and sixth of the year.   • Collects third hold
    Kimbrel struck out one in a perfect seventh inning Friday to record his third hold of the season in a 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

    Advice: The 35-year-old reliever didn't exactly get deployed in the highest-leverage spot, as he faced Arizona's 8-9-1 hitters, but Kimbrel got the job done on an efficient 12 pitches (eight strikes). He topped out at 94.5 mph with his fastball though -- he averaged 95.9 mph last season -- and it was only the second time in Kimbrel's last seven appearances that he avoided giving up a run. Yennier Cano got the save in the ninth inning, and that figures be the arrangement for a while until Kimbrel demonstrates his struggles are behind him, although other relievers like Danny Coulombe could also be in the saves mix. Over those last seven appearances, Kimbrel has a 10.13 ERA, 3.19 WHIP and 8:9 K:BB in 5.1 innings. Rotowire.com 14 minutes ago

    Cano gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his second save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

    Advice: Craig Kimbrel worked the seventh inning and faced the bottom of the Arizona order, a strong sign that at least for the moment, manager Brandon Hyde is focused on building the veteran closer's confidence back up rather than throwing him into the fire in the ninth. Due to Kimbrel's recent struggles, Cano has picked up both his 2024 saves in his last three appearances, but Jacob Webb and Danny Coulombe have also collected saves in the last couple weeks, although the former's came in the 12th inning. Even if the O's turn to a committee to protect leads at the end of games, Cano figures to see the majority of save chances until Kimbrel proves he's ready to resume his usual role.   • Max Meyer struggling back at Triple-A Jacksonville
    Max Meyer was charged with four runs (two earned) over 2 2/3 innings on Friday for Triple-A Jacksonville.

    Advice: Meyer struck out five and also issued four walks. He was brilliant in three starts for the Marlins at the outset of the regular season, but has struggled since returning to Triple-A. The 25-year-old righty holds a bloated 9.24 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 16/7 K/BB ratio across 12 2/3 innings (four starts). It’s unclear when he’ll be summoned back to Miami, but we’re anticipating he’ll make an impact for fantasy managers, especially in the strikeout department, on a per-start basis.   • Just misses quality start Friday
    Irvin (4-1) picked up the win Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in a 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks. He struck out six.

    Advice: The southpaw was sharp and had given up only a solo shot to Ketel Marte heading into the sixth inning, but Irvin got the hook after 95 pitches (62 strikes) with runners on first and second and two outs. Albert Suarez then promptly gave up a single to let one of the inherited runners score, but the O's bullpen took care of business the rest of the way. Irvin generated 30 called or swinging strikes as he won his fourth straight start, and after a bumpy beginning to the season he's posted a 1.19 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB in 30.1 innings over his last five outings.     Peralta was reinstated from his five-game suspension and will start Saturday's game against the Cardinals in Milwaukee.

    Advice: Peralta was handed the five-game ban for throwing at the Rays' Jose Siri in an April 30 game, but he initially appealed the suspension and made his next turn through the rotation this past Sunday against the Cubs. He dropped his appeal a day later and began serving the ban, which concluded Friday. Peralta was presumably able to stay on his usual between-starts throwing regimen while he was suspended, so he shouldn't face any restrictions with his pitch count as he returns to the rubber Saturday.     Pfaadt (1-3) took the loss Friday as the Diamondbacks fell 4-2 to the Orioles, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings. He failed to strikeout a batter.

    Advice: The 25-year-old right-hander produced his third straight quality start and fourth of the season on 88 pitches (56 strikes), but Pfaadt generated only six swinging strikes as he came up empty in the strikeout department for the first time in 26 big-league starts -- in fact, he'd never fanned fewer than three batters in an outing before Friday.     Rodriguez (shoulder) began a throwing program out to 45 feet Friday, the Associated Press reports.

    Advice: A recent MRI on the shoulder showed positive results, and Rodriguez resumed throwing again. The left-hander was on a throwing program in early April but had it paused when he felt discomfort during a bullpen session April 9. Shortly thereafter he was moved to the 60-day injured list.
