      Verlander pitched seven innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two.

      Advice: Verlander allowed the leadoff man to reach in four of his seven innings of work, but managed to limit the damage to only two runs, both of which came across in the top of the fifth. The veteran right-hander struggled to get ahead in the count for much of the contest and has now issued at least three walks in back-to-back starts, though he's still held opposing teams to two or fewer runs in all three outings to open the campaign.       Buehler (elbow) will start Monday's game against the Marlins, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Monday will mark Buehler's first start on a big-league mound since he underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2022. He made six starts during his minor-league rehab assignment, posting a 4.15 ERA and 1.62 WHIP while striking out 21 batters and walking nine across 21.2 innings. Nearly two years removed from his last major-league start, there is a good chance that the 29-year-old right-hander shows a bit of rust in his first few outings as he gets used to facing MLB hitters again.       Holmes earned the save Wednesday, allowing one hit with three strikeouts over 1.2 scoreless innings against Baltimore.

      Advice: Holmes capped off an excellent game by the Yankees pitching staff, as they yielded three hits and no runs as a whole. Individually, Holmes logged three strikeouts for the first time all year and his 1.2 innings of work marked his longest outing of the campaign.       Musgrove didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts over six innings against the Reds.

      Advice: After being tagged for seven runs and four long balls in his last start, Musgrove set a season high in strikeouts and notched his fourth quality start of the campaign. While three of the four hits did go for extra bases, including a first-inning solo homer by Spencer Steer, Musgrove was able to keep his opponent to less than three runs for the first time in four starts. Through eight starts, Musgrove owns a 2.2 HR/9 after having not allowed more than 1.1 HR/9 since 2017. He's tentatively scheduled for a start Tuesday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.       Justin Verlander allowed two runs with two strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Wednesday.

      Advice: Verlander had worked around four hits and two walks through four scoreless innings until the Guardians got to him in the fifth. Will Brennan led off the inning with a solo homer to put Cleveland on the board. A walk and triple brought one more run across before Verlander escaped the frame. He tossed two more innings for the quality start, striking out two batters. The 41-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 2.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and a 13/7 K/BB ratio across 17 1/3 innings.     • Clay Holmes locks down five-out save against O’s
      Clay Holmes slammed the door on the Orioles on Wednesday night, getting the final five outs to preserve a two-run advantage.

      Advice: Holmes was called upon with two men on and one out in the eighth inning, and he quelled that threat by striking out Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman in succession to end the inning. He returned for the ninth where he allowed a leadoff single to Ryan O’Hearn and nothing more. The 31-year-old right-hander has been unbelievable so far this season, hurling 15 innings of scoreless baseball with a 16/1 K/BB ratio while converting 10 of his first 11 save chances. Studly.       Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Gallen (hamstring) won't start Friday as scheduled in an effort to provide him extra rest, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

      Advice: The right-hander was originally set to start Wednesday, but Tuesday's starter Jordan Montgomery was pushed back a day since the start time was delayed two hours. Gallen apparently isn't having any issues with the hamstring injury that surfaced in his previous start, but Lovullo has still decided to give his ace some extra rest. The earliest Gallen will take the mound is Sunday versus the Padres, but it's possible he gets some additional time, as team off days Thursday and Monday give Arizona some flexibility.       Joe Musgrove posted a season-high nine strikeouts and allowed two runs over six innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Reds.

      Advice: Musgrove cobbled together one of his strongest performances of the season to date, It was a much-needed bounce-back effort after being shelled for seven runs on eight hits, including four homers, over 3 2/3 innings his last time out against the Phillies. His average fastball velocity was back above 93 mph in this one as he induced 14 swinging strikes and finished with a solid 32 percent CSW. He’ll bring an inflated 6.37 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 36/13 K/BB ratio across 41 innings (eight starts) into a road tilt on Tuesday against the Cubs at historic Wrigley Field.
