    • Starts against lefty
      Carter started in center field and went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Thursday's 6-0 win over Washington.

      Advice: Carter got the rare start against a left-hander and produced his second hit in 16 at-bats against a southpaw. Texas manager Bruce Bochy has shied away from using Carter in these situations but gave him a shot Thursday with Leody Taveras getting the night off. Rangers general manager Chris Young explained to Kennedi Landry of MLB.com that Carter has not faced the quality of stuff that major-league lefties have at this point in his MLB career, suggesting they are bringing the 21-year-old along slowly in that regard. "I think [Bochy] is doing a very good job of giving him his fair share of at-bats against lefties knowing that there's only one way to develop, and that's to go through it," the GM said.       Encarnacion-Strand (hand) and teammate Tyler Stephenson are expected to return Friday when the Reds host the Orioles, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

      Advice: The Reds' bats went quiet on their 2-4 road trip against the Rangers and Padres, hitting .201 as a team while averaging 10 strikeouts per game on the trip. Of course, Encarnacion-Strand has been struggling this year in both aspects, hitting .196 with a troubling 3:31 BB:K ratio in 108 plate appearances. Perhaps with better health and better weather he will come close to displaying the form he showed in 2023, when he hit .270/.328/.477 in 241 plate appearances at the big league level.       Braxton Garrett (shoulder) fired five shutout innings on Wednesday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Jacksonville.

      Advice: Garrett finished with three strikeouts, built up his pitch count to 61 (33 strikes) and averaged 90.7 mph in his likely final tune-up before rejoining Miami’s starting rotation mix for his season debut. The 26-year-old hurler has been out since spring training due to a left shoulder impingement and a setback after experiencing a “dead arm” phase.       Garrett (shoulder) allowed one hit and three walks while striking out three over five scoreless innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday.

      Advice: Garrett got his pitch count up to 61 and averaged 90.7 miles per hour with his sinker, which is right in line with his normal velocity. Wednesday's outing should be his final tune-up before he returns from the 15-day injured list to make his season debut with the Marlins. Garrett, who has been sidelined with a left shoulder impingement and more recently went through a "dead arm" phase, tentatively lines up to start Monday versus the Dodgers on the road.       Advice: Kwan's RBI triple in the fifth inning gave the Guardians a 2-0 lead, and he plated the decisive run with a double in the 10th. He ended up a home run short of the cycle in Wednesday's strong performance.       Steven Kwan went 3-for-5 with a triple, double, and two RBI in a 3-2 win over the Astros on Wednesday.

      Advice: After knocking a base hit in the first inning, Kwan drove in a run with a triple in the fifth. He came through in a big spot in the tenth, driving in the go-ahead run with a double. Kwan capped off his day with a game-ending diving catch in the bottom of the inning.       Advice: Machado stepped up to the plate in the fifth with the bases juiced and cleared them all with a double to center field. That was his first extra-base hit since April 14 and his first multi-RBI game since April 12. He's tallied a hit in four of his five games since being reinstated from the paternity list and is now slashing .250/.304/.388 with four homers, 16 RBI, 16 runs and a 9:29 BB:K in 125 plate appearances.       Orioles 2B/SS prospect Jackson Holliday went 3-for-6 with an RBI on Tuesday for Triple-A Norfolk.

      Advice: Holliday flopped in his first taste of the big leagues as Baltimore continued to challenge him from a development standpoint. However, that shouldn’t diminish fantasy managers’ long-term optimism. The latest multi-hit effort raises his Triple-A slash line to .321/.451/.554 with nine extra-base hits and one steal through 13 contests. He’ll get some extended time in the minors to continue ironing out contact issues and struggles against left-handed pitching, but it’s only a matter of time before he gets another shot in Baltimore.
