    • Pirates option slumping Henry Davis to Triple-A
Pirates optioned C/OF Henry Davis to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Advice: The 24-year-old former top overall pick opened the season as the Pirates’ starting catcher, but stumbled to a miserable .162/.280/.206 slash line with zero homers, four RBI, zero stolen bases and a 29/11 K/BB ratio over 83 plate appearances. Getting back into a rhythm at Triple-A and beating up on minor league pitching should help to restore his confidence before the Pirates bring him back up. Yasmani Grandal was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move on Friday. Rotoworld Today, 2:32 pm

    • Could join MLB rotation next week
Javier (neck) will throw four innings or roughly 60-to-65 pitches Saturday for Double-A Corpus Christi before potentially rejoining the big-league rotation, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Advice: Manager Joe Espada said the hope is that Javier can rejoin Houston's rotation after this first rehab start, which would line him up to return either Thursday in New York or Friday in Detroit. He has been out since April 14 with neck discomfort. Rotowire.com Today, 2:11 pm

    • Optioned to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Davis to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Advice: Davis entered the season as the Pirates' clear No. 1 catcher, but he slashed just .162/.280/.206 with a 34.9 percent strikeout rate and recently had fallen into a timeshare with Joey Bart. The Pirates will presumably keep Davis at catcher at Indianapolis, although it's possible he could be worked back into the mix in right field. Rotowire.com Today, 12:36 pm

    • Back in action Friday
Encarnacion-Strand (hand) will start at first base and bat fifth in Friday's game versus the Orioles.

Advice: Encarnacion-Strand missed four starts due to lingering left hand soreness following a hit-by-pitch over the weekend, but he's ready to go now. The 24-year-old has slashed a disappointing .196/.222/.314 with a 28.7 percent strikeout rate in 25 contests with the Reds this season. Rotowire.com Today, 11:08 am
    • Likely to return Friday
Encarnacion-Strand (hand) and teammate Tyler Stephenson are expected to return Friday when the Reds host the Orioles, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: The Reds' bats went quiet on their 2-4 road trip against the Rangers and Padres, hitting .201 as a team while averaging 10 strikeouts per game on the trip. Of course, Encarnacion-Strand has been struggling this year in both aspects, hitting .196 with a troubling 3:31 BB:K ratio in 108 plate appearances. Perhaps with better health and better weather he will come close to displaying the form he showed in 2023, when he hit .270/.328/.477 in 241 plate appearances at the big-league level. • Slated for rehab assignment
Astros manager Joe Espada said Thursday that Javier (neck) will begin a rehab assignment over the weekend, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Espada didn't specify exactly when Javier's first rehab appearance will be, nor did he say how long the 27-year-old right-hander will remain in the minors. However, there had been speculation that Javier would be able to avoid a rehab assignment completely, so he may only need to make one start before returning to an Astros rotation that has already dealt with numerous injuries this season. • Cristian Javier to make rehab start this weekend
Cristian Javier (neck) will begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend.

Advice: It’s an extremely encouraging development for Houston’s injury-plagued rotation as Javier appears close to returning after landing on the injured list back on April 21 with neck discomfort. The 27-year-old righty might be ready to return after just one rehab outing, but nothing official yet. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:03 pm

    • Fans nine in win over M's
Sale (4-1) picked up the win Wednesday in a 5-2 victory over the Mariners, allowing one run on six hits over five innings. He struck out nine without walking a batter.

Advice: The veteran lefty wasn't exactly efficient, needing 100 pitches to record 15 outs, but Sale generated an eye-popping 21 swinging strikes in another dominant performance. The nine Ks were a season high, and Sale has given up three runs or less in five of his six starts to begin his Atlanta tenure. He'll take a 3.44 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 42:7 K:BB through 36.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up for a home start next week against the former club, the Red Sox. • Solid over seven frames
McKenzie did not factor into the decision in a win over the Astros on Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out six.

Advice: McKenzie was highly effective Wednesday despite getting down in the count early and often, striking out at least six batters for the third consecutive start, with five of those strikeouts coming on his curveball. The right-hander issued only one free pass in the contest, which marked a season best, while also going seven innings for the first time in the early campaign. McKenzie has not allowed more than two runs in any of his last three starts after surrendering a season-high five runs against the Yankees back on April 13. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 4:10 am
