Advice: Varland was called up for a spot start on Tuesday to give the starting rotation a rest and did well, allowing just one hit over five innings against the Rockies while walking only one batter and striking out three. He will head back to Triple-A to continue working on his changeup and cutter, which were two things the Twins were concerned about in his early-season struggles. Advice: Carroll began his night with an RBI triple in the second and later came around to score. He then doubled his next time up in the fourth and would walk and cross home once more in the fifth. Carroll's been dialed in at the plate as of late. Over his last five games, he's tallied nine hits and four walks while not striking out a single time. Advice: The veteran slugger led off the game with a deep blast to right field off Kutter Crawford, then did it again to lead off the fifth. Schwarber's June exploits have become legendary -- per Paul Casella of MLB.com, he's averaging one homer every 10.4 at-bats in his career during the month, the best pace in MLB history ahead of Babe Ruth's 10.6. Unfortunately, his solid effort was enough to earn him the win, as the Twins offense mustered just two hits while he was on the mound and eventually fell behind in the sixth thanks to a three-run homer by Ezequiel Tovar. It was Varland’s best outing by far, as he showed good command of his stuff and needed just 63 pitches to get through his five frames. He entered the day with a 9.18 ERA but saw that number drop to 7.06 thanks to the strong night.
