    • Tracking toward return next week
Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that he expects Montas (forearm) to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible May 7 or the day after, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Montas was placed on the IL on April 22 with a bruised right forearm, which he sustained when he was struck by a line drive in his start a day earlier. Bell noted that Montas threw a side session Monday without issue, and the right-hander will throw one more bullpen session later this week as a final test of his health. If all goes well, Montas should rejoin the rotation for the Reds' three-game series with the Diamondbacks that begins next Tuesday. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:27 pm

    • Lands six-out win
Hader (1-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one unearned run on one hit and one walk with four strikeouts over two innings against the Guardians.

Advice: Hader surrendered a double to David Fry in the 10th inning that plated designated runner Josh Naylor as the go-ahead run. Still, Hader ended up with his first victory of the campaign following a Victor Caratini walk-off homer in the home half of the frame. After a bounce-back 2023 season, Hader looks to have regressed to his poor 2022 form (5.22 ERA across 56 appearances), producing a 6.39 ERA across the first 12.2 innings of his Astros tenure. • Montas hits injured list with forearm contusion
Reds placed RHP Frankie Montas on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm contusion.

Advice: Montas was hit in the forearm by a comebacker during Sunday’s start, but fortunately there’s no structural damage. With some rest before ramping back up, he could be ready to return around when he’s first eligible next month. Rotoworld Monday, 12:47 pm

    • Shelved with bruised forearm
The Reds placed Montas (forearm) on the 15-day injured list Monday.

Advice: Montas' move to the IL isn't an overly surprising one, as the right-hander had already conceded that he would need to miss at least his next turn through the rotation after exiting in the first inning of his start Sunday against the Angels when he was struck in his pitching arm by a liner. Fortunately for Montas, he was able to avoid any fractured bones, but he's dealing with a painful bruise that will keep him on the shelf for at least the next two weeks. If Montas is able to resume throwing in the coming days, he should have a good chance at returning from the 15-day IL around the time he's first eligible for activation May 7. The Reds are likely to turn to Nick Martinez to fill Montas' spot in the rotation. Rotowire.com Monday, 12:45 pm

    • Twins demote RHP Louie Varland to Triple-A
Twins optioned RHP Louie Varland to Triple-A St. Paul.

Advice: It’s not a big surprise. Varland holds a brutal 9.18 ERA with six homers allowed in 16 2/3 innings through his first four starts. It spoke volumes that Twins manager Rocco Baldelli declined to commit to him making his next start after he struggled again on Sunday. Simeon Woods-Richardson could be up next in the Twins’ rotation, though he’s not a name to trust in mixed leagues from the outset. Rotoworld Monday, 10:46 am

    • Dispatched to Triple-A
Minnesota optioned Varland to Triple-A St. Paul on Monday.

Advice: The move comes one day after Varland turned in another ugly start in which he allowed four runs over just 2.2 innings in a 6-1 loss to the Tigers. Varland offered plenty of potential at the beginning of the season, but it hasn't manifested thus far, as he held a 9.18 ERA in four outings. Simeon Woods Richardson could be called up from Triple-A to take Varland's spot in the rotation later this week. Rotowire.com Monday, 10:27 am

    • Louie Varland’s rotation spot is in jeopardy
Twins manager Rocco Baldelli declined to commit to Louie Varland taking his next scheduled turn in the rotation.

Advice: Varland has really struggled to begin the year. On Sunday, he somehow escaped a 39-pitch first inning against the Tigers but only lasted 2 2/3 innings while giving up four runs allowed. He’s now 0-4 with a 9.18 ERA and six homers allowed in 16 2/3 innings. When asked if Varland would make his next start, Baldelli said, “We have a whole lot of things we have to talk about. We have to have really almost anything on the table right now to find a way to improve.” It’s possible that a demotion to Triple-A could be in the future and Simeon Woods-Richardson is a name to keep an eye on to take Varland’s place.
