• Getting Wednesday off
Naylor is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros.

Advice: Naylor started at catcher in each of the past three games, so he's presumably just getting a rest day Wednesday. David Fry will get the nod behind the plate in Naylor's place. Rotowire.com 3 minutes ago

  • Designated for assignment
The Red Sox designated Gutierrez for assignment Wednesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Advice: Gutierrez will lose his spot on the 40-man roster to create space for Dominic Smith, who signed a major-league deal with the Red Sox on Wednesday. The 28-year-old righty owns a 9.28 ERA and 2.16 WHIP across 10.2 innings in Triple-A this season, and he will likely pass through waivers unclaimed. Rotowire.com 7 minutes ago
  • Placed on injured list
The Red Sox placed Yoshida on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left thumb strain, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Advice: MRI results revealed a strain in Yoshida's left thumb after he jammed his hand during Sunday's game against the Cubs, and there is no telling whether or not the 30-year-old outfielder will be able to return when eligible May 10. The newly-signed Dominic Smith will take Yoshida's place on the active roster. Rotowire.com 11 minutes ago

  • Demoted to Triple-A
The Brewers optioned Uribe to Triple-A Nashville after Thursday's win against the Rays, Adam McCalvy of MLB.comreports.

Advice: It's been an eventful two days for Uribe, who is now headed to the minors after being handed a six-game suspension for his role in Tuesday's benches-clearing brawl versus the Rays. The right-hander appealed the ban and allowed a run on a hit and two walks over one inning Wednesday, and he now has a 6.91 ERA and 14:12 K:BB across 14.1 frames this season. The 22-year-old will likely be tasked with honing his command down at Triple-A, and the demotion will give Milwaukee some bullpen security with Freddy Peralta also facing a suspension, as Uribe won't begin serving his ban until he's back on the major-league roster. • Moved up in rotation
Cecconi will start Friday against the Padres instead of Saturday as previously scheduled, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Advice: The 24-year-old right hander will take the mound a day earlier than expected with Zac Gallen still recovering from his hamstring injury. Cecconi has posted a 2.25 ERA, 0.50 WHIP and 11:1 K:BB over 12 innings in his two-game stint in the major-league rotation. Rotowire.com 19 minutes ago
  • Red Sox outright Joely Rodriguez to Triple-A
Red Sox sent LHP Joely Rodriguez outright to Triple-A Worcester.

Advice: Rodriguez slipped through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as bullpen depth for the Red Sox in the upper minors. He’ll get another chance at some point during the 2024 season. Rotoworld 20 minutes ago
  • Slam Diego: Jake Cronenworth powers Padres to win
Jake Cronenworth blasted a tie-breaking seventh-inning grand slam on Wednesday, powering the Padres to a 6-2 victory over the Reds.

Advice: Cronenworth put San Diego ahead for good with a towering grand slam to right field off Reds standout reliever Fernando Cruz in the seventh inning. It was his fifth long ball of the season and lone hit in three at-bats. The 30-year-old on-base machine has helped hold things together this season as a mainstay in the heart of San Diego’s lineup. • Spencer Steer snaps homerless streak Wednesday
Spencer Steer clobbered a solo homer on Wednesday in the Reds’ loss to the Padres.

Advice: Steer kicked off the scoring with a solo shot to left-center field -- his fourth round-tripper of the season -- off Padres starter Joe Musgrove in the opening frame. It was the first time he’s gone deep since April 6, snapping a bizarre 22-game homerless drought. The versatile 26-year-old on-base machine is batting .252/.364/.450 with 18 runs scored, four homers, 22 RBI and eight stolen bases through 31 contests. Rotoworld 21 minutes ago

  • Start pushed back
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Gallen (hamstring) won't start Friday as scheduled in an effort to provide him extra rest, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Advice: The right-hander was originally set to start Wednesday, but Tuesday's starter Jordan Montgomery was pushed back a day since the start time was delayed two hours. Gallen apparently isn't having any issues with the hamstring injury that surfaced in his previous start, but Lovullo has still decided to give his ace some extra rest. The earliest Gallen will take the mound is Sunday versus the Padres, but it's possible he gets some additional time, as team off days Thursday and Monday give Arizona some flexibility.
