    • Matt Vierling homers again as Tigers drop nightcap
Matt Vierling homered for the fourth time in his last three games on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Tigers past the Pirates in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Advice: After belting a pair of home runs — including a walk-off — on Sunday, and crushing a three-run shot in the first game on Wednesday, Vierling tagged Paul Skenes for a 373-foot solo shot in the sixth inning of the nightcap. He finished the afternoon 1-for-4 and is now slashing an impressive .289/.320/.503 to go along with seven homers and 28 RBI on the season. Rotoworld Wednesday, 3:29 pm

    • Matt Vierling hits three-run homer in rout
Matt Vierling went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI against the Pirates in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Advice: Vierling has three homers and eight runs batted in in his last two games. His season OPS is up to .811, and especially now that Kerry Carpenter is on the IL, he should be a fixture against righties and lefties alike for at least the next couple of weeks. That makes him a decent play in mixed leagues, though it hurts that he’s become a zero in steals. Rotoworld Wednesday, 12:15 pm

    • Mookie Betts plays second for first time in weeks
The Dodgers have Mookie Betts at second base and Miguel Rojas at shortstop in Wednesday’s game against the Mets.

Advice: It’s Betts’ first start at second base in exactly a month, as the Dodgers had been leaving him at shortstop when playing Rojas over Gavin Lux against lefties. This is how they did it in April before making Betts a permanent shortstop in recent weeks. Rotoworld Wednesday, 10:29 am

    • Idle against lefty
Marsh is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants.

Advice: Southpaw Kyle Harrison is on the hill for the Giants in the series finale, so the lefty-hitting Marsh will bow out of the starting nine. Whit Merrifield steps in for Marsh as the Phillies' starting left fielder. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 10:14 am
    • Plays both games in twin bill
Smith went 1-for-9 with a solo home run in Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Mets.

Advice: Smith caught all 10 innings during Game 1 of the twin bill, then remained in the lineup as the Dodgers' DH in Game 2. He produced one of the team's three runs in the nightcap with a solo homer to left field. Smith's use as the designated hitter after catching in Game 1 highlights how valuable his bat is to the team, though his opportunities to fill the DH role have been more limited this season with Shohei Ohtani in the fold. • Reds get TJ Friedl back from broken thumb
Reds activated OF TJ Friedl from the 10-day injured list.

Advice: It sounded like this was still at least a few days away, but the Reds are bringing Friedl back from a thumb fracture without the benefit of a rehab assignment. He’ll resume playing center field most of the time, and Jacob Hurtubise will probably head to the bench for the most part, though he might have a chance to start over Will Benson if he gets hot. • Makes return from IL
The Reds activated Friedl (thumb) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. He'll start in center field and bat leadoff in the Reds' series finale with the Cardinals.

Advice: Friedl missed just two and a half weeks with a fractured left thumb and will make his return without going on a rehab assignment beforehand. The outfielder has been limited to just six games this season due to the thumb injury as well as the fractured wrist. He should see the bulk of the action in center field for Cincinnati now that he's been cleared for game action. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 7:45 am

    • Slugs game-winning homer
Ozuna went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Nationals.

Advice: The veteran slugger broke open a scoreless tie when he took Jacob Barnes deep in the seventh inning, continuing his most recent hit streak. Ozuna has reached base safely in 21 straight games, a stretch in which he's slashing .324/.409/.662 with seven homers and 16 RBI. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 7:43 am

    • Resumes baseball activity
Lowe (oblique) went through a full workout on the field and hit in the batting cage prior to Tuesday's game against the A's, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Lowe felt good after the work and will now increase the intensity of his activity over the next several days, including hitting against a high-velocity pitching machine and throwing with full intensity. For now, Lowe is expecting to be back from the injured list when first eligible. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 7:00 am
