    • Back in majors
The Giants recalled Avila from Double-A Richmond on Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Advice: Avila was just optioned Wednesday but is back to take Blake Snell's (paternity) spot on the roster. He will give manager Bob Melvin another relief option but could be sent back down in a few days when Snell returns. Rotowire.com 7 minutes ago

    • Reaches fourth inning in rehab start
Williamson (shoulder) struck out four and allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk over 3.2 innings Sunday in his rehab start with Triple-A Louisville.

Advice: Sunday's outing was Williamson's first with Louisville but the second overall of his rehab assignment, which he began with High-A Dayton on May 14. Williamson, who has been on the shelf all season with a left shoulder strain, is eligible for activation next week, but he'll likely need at least another rehab start or two to get fully stretched out for a traditional starting role. With Nick Lodolo (groin) tentatively in line to return from the 15-day injured list Monday to bring the Cincinnati rotation back to full strength, Williamson may have to settle for a bullpen role once activated, if the Reds don't elect to option him to Louisville to remain on a starter's schedule. • Falls to Friars
Martinez (1-3) took the loss Wednesday as the Reds were downed 7-3 by the Padres, coughing up five runs on eight hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out two.

Advice: Making his fifth start of the season, Martinez served up a leadoff homer to Luis Arraez that proved to be a bad omen for the rest of the game as he lasted only 66 pitches (40 strikes) before getting the hook. The right-hander has been volatile in a swingman role for Cincy, posting a 4.81 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 31:6 K:BB through 43 innings, but with Nick Lodolo (groin) set to rejoin the rotation Monday, Martinez should be headed back to the bullpen. • Earns first save
Koch picked up the save in an extra-innings win over Oakland on Wednesday, allowing one walk over one-third of an inning.

Advice: Koch entered the contest with two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the 12th and proceeded to walk the first batter he faced, putting him in an even bigger jam. However, the right-hander was able to get Max Schuemann to fly out in the following at-bat to secure his first save of the season. Koch got the opportunity after Jalen Beeks blew the save in the ninth, marking the former's first big-league appearance this season. Rotowire.com 37 minutes ago
    • Still on track for Monday return
Lodolo (groin) threw a successful extended bullpen session Wednesday and is set to throw off the mound again Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: Assuming he comes out of Saturday's session without any hiccups, Lodolo will be set to return from the 15-day injured list to start against the Cardinals on Monday, the first day he'll be eligible for activation. The left-hander is working his way back from a left groin strain. Rotowire.com 43 minutes ago

    • Completes four innings
Baz (elbow) allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out four across four innings during a rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Wednesday.

Advice: This was Baz's best rehab appearance since starting the assignment May 4. He's still fighting his control, as he has walked 11 batters across 12 innings, though that shouldn't come as a significant surprise given his lengthy layoff since last pitching in a meaningful game. The Rays will likely want him to make at least one more start in the minors, but he could rejoin the big-league rotation in early June. Rotowire.com Today, 7:10 am

    • Throws bullpen session
Poche (back) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Poche had made little progress since suffering a back injury in late April, but he felt good after his throwing session Wednesday. He'll continue to ramp up in the hopes of facing hitters by May 30 as the next step in his recovery. Rotowire.com Today, 7:05 am

    • Sent down to Triple-A
Atlanta optioned Hernandez to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.

Advice: Atlanta opted to keep Hernandez around for a bit after he was initially called up from Gwinnett to serve as the 27th man for Monday's doubleheader against the Padres, but he'll now head back to the minors to make room for Thursday's starter, AJ Smith-Shawver, who was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Hernandez has allowed one unearned run over two relief innings with the big club this season. Rotowire.com Today, 7:05 am
    • Recalled ahead of Thursday's start
Atlanta recalled Smith-Shawver from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.

Advice: Manager Brian Snitker previously confirmed after Wednesday's 9-2 win that Smith-Shawver would start Thursday's game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The young right-hander holds a 6.10 ERA and 1.52 WHIP this season with Gwinnett and has posted a 7.43 ERA and allowed six home runs over his last three starts. Given those results, fantasy managers would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach with Smith-Shawver, but the 21-year-old should have an opportunity to make additional starts for Atlanta if he pitches well Thursday.
