• Deployed in eighth inning Friday
Suarez earned a hold against Atlanta on Friday, allowing two hits and striking out two batters over one inning.

Advice: Suarez has been one of the best closers in baseball this season with 12 saves (in 12 chances) and a 0.47 ERA, so his usage in the eighth inning against Atlanta was not a demotion. Rather, the right-hander was called upon to face the heart of Atlanta's formidable lineup, and though he gave up singles to Marcell Ozuna and Chadwick Tromp, Suarez managed to emerge from the outing with his 16-game scoreless streak intact. The 33-year-old should see most of his work in the ninth inning going forward, though Friday's usage is an indication that manager Mike Shildt won't hesitate to use Suarez in the highest-leverage situations prior to the ninth if the situation calls for it. • Robert Suarez faces heart of Braves lineup in 8th
Robert Suarez worked the eighth against the Braves on Friday and picked up his first hold by pitching a scoreless inning.

Advice: The Padres don’t usually play matchups with their closer, but they did tonight with No. 2 hitter Ozzie Albies due up to start the eighth. It all worked out perfectly; Suarez gave up a couple of hits, but he protected the two-run lead, and then Jeremiah Estrada locked things up against the bottom of the order in the ninth. • Can't overcome rough first inning
Miller (3-4) took the loss Friday against the Orioles, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out one.

Advice: All of the damage against Miller came in the first inning, when the Orioles put up five runs before the right-hander could record an out. Miller would settle in and blank Baltimore over his final 4.1 frames, allowing just two more hits, though the Mariners couldn't climb out of the early hole in an eventual 9-2 defeat. The 24-year-old Miller has been solid this year overall, holding opponents to two runs or fewer in six of his nine starts. He sports a 3.08 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP and 52:16 K:BB across 52.2 innings this season. Miller is currently lined up for a tough road matchup with the Yankees in his next outing. • Bryce Miller hit hard in loss to Orioles on Friday
Bryce Miller was hit hard in Friday night’s loss to the Orioles, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits across 5 1/3 innings.

Advice: The 25-year-old hurler walked one and recorded only one strikeout on the night. The Orioles jumped on him early and often in this one, with Gunnar Henderson blasting a leadoff home run to start a five-run uprising in the opening inning. Miller settled in nicely afterwards, but the damage had already been done. He got just six swings and misses on 86 pitches in the contest, posting an underwhelming CSW of only 22 percent. He’ll attempt to bounce back as he totes an impressive 3.08 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and a 52/16 K/BB ratio (52 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Yankees in New York. Rotoworld Friday, 6:38 pm
  • Throwing bullpen session
Cabrera (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Advice: It will be his first time on the bump since he landed on the 15-day injured list May 8 with a right shoulder impingement. Cabrera has been on the IL twice this season with the same injury and it's not clear how long he'll be sidelined this time around, but he's on the comeback trail. Rotowire.com Friday, 1:48 pm

  • Collects first win
Lopez (1-0) picked up the win in Thursday's extra-innings victory over the Phillies, walking one batter in a scoreless 10th inning.

Advice: The 31-year-old right-hander has seen his numbers take a step backward in May, and through seven innings this month he has a 3.86 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 4:6 K:BB. Lopez got the job done Thursday though, and he's collected one win, two saves and six holds in 22 appearances while giving the Mets some valuable middle-relief depth. Rotowire.com Friday, 7:49 am
  • Notches second save
Sewald worked a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his second save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Reds.

Advice: The right-hander needed only eight pitches (four strikes) to get the job done. Sewald has been his usual effective self since making his season debut May 7, giving up just one run with a 4:1 K:BB in his first four innings, and he has a firm hold on the closer role for Arizona. • Paul Sewald quiets Reds to collect second save
Paul Sewald tossed a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday against the Reds to collect his second save of the season.

Advice: Sewald got the call to protect a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth after Lourdes Gurriel Jr. put Arizona ahead in the top of the frame with a two-out RBI double. He got Mike Ford to ground out before coaxing a harmless pop up from Spencer Steer and a fly out from Jeimer Candelario to end the contest. The 33-year-old veteran stopper has converted both of his save chances to go along with a 2.25 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 4/1 K/BB ratio across four innings (four appearances) since returning from the injured list back on May 7. • Fans six in no-decision
Civale came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 5-4 extra-innings loss to the Red Sox, giving up three runs on five hits over five innings. He struck out six without walking a batter.

Advice: The right-hander kept Boston off the board his first time through the order, but a two-run double by Dominic Smith in the fourth inning and a solo shot by Ceddanne Rafaela in the fifth sent Civale packing after 76 pitches (53 strikes). He's failed to last more than five innings in any of his last five starts, a stretch in which he's stumbled to an 8.87 ERA and 1.71 WHIP, and his rotation spot could be in jeopardy if he doesn't turn things around by the time Ryan Pepiot (leg) and Shane Baz (elbow) are ready to rejoin the team. Civale lines up to make his next start on the road this weekend in Toronto. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 12:49 am
