• Hitting pause on rehab
Sewald (oblique) will have his rehab slowed a bit due to soreness, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.

Advice: Sewald felt some soreness following a rehab appearance with Triple-A Reno earlier this week. He had been scheduled for a bullpen session Saturday, but that has been scrapped. While it does not seem to be a major setback for the reliever, Sewald no longer appears poised to return soon. Kevin Ginkel will continue to serve as the Diamondbacks' closer while Sewald recovers. • Paul Sewald slowed a bit due to renewed soreness
Paul Sewald (oblique) will not throw a scheduled bullpen session on Saturday due to renewed soreness in his oblique.

Advice: The Diamondbacks aren’t calling it a major setback for the right-hander, but they will slow down his rehab a bit to make sure not to push him. It initially looked as though Sewald could join the Diamondbacks’ bullpen in the coming days, but now it looks like Kevin Ginkel may be working the ninth inning for another week or so. • Bullpen scheduled
Sewald (oblique) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Sewald threw 21 pitches (14 strikes) in a rehab appearance earlier in the week and felt the right kind of soreness a day later. Following Saturday's session and presuming all goes well, the reliever is likely to head out for a second rehab outing. Rotowire.com Today, 5:43 am

  • Picks up save No. 9
Suarez earned a save against the Rockies on Wednesday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning.

Advice: Suarez needed just seven pitches (five of which were strikes) to set the Rockies down in order and preserve a three-run San Diego victory. The right-hander extended his streak of scoreless outings to nine and lowered his sterling ERA to 0.77. Suarez has been one of the league's best closers so far this season with nine saves (tied for first in MLB). Rotowire.com Wednesday, 11:43 pm

Robert Suarez struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to secure the save against the Rockies.

Advice: Suarez was given a three-run lead to protect in the ninth inning. He worked quickly, striking out one batter and closing it out on seven pitches for his league-leading ninth save of the season. The 33-year-old right-hander holds a 0.77 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and a 10/4 K/BB ratio across 11 2/3 innings. Rotoworld Wednesday, 8:10 pm

  • Activation coming soon
Manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Sewald (oblique) is meeting with the Diamondbacks medical team to determine whether he needs another rehab appearance or if he's ready to return from the 15-day injured list, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Advice: Sewald allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in his first rehab outing at Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. That outing might be the only rehab appearance that Sewald needs, as Lovullo noted that the right-hander is "getting extremely close" to a return to the Arizona bullpen. Sewald has been out all season with a strained left oblique, but he should take over as the team's closer once he's activated. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 9:10 am

  • Claims eighth save Monday
Suarez earned a save against the Rockies on Monday, giving up two hits in a scoreless inning of work.

Advice: Suarez entered in the ninth inning with San Diego up by two runs and found himself in some trouble when two of the first three batters he faced notched a hit. However, the right-hander got Ryan McMahon to ground into a game-ending double play to escape the jam without a run charged to his ledger. Suarez has now competed eight straight scoreless appearances, and he's given up just one run over 10.2 frames on the season. With eight saves, he is tied with Clay Holmes for first in the majors in that category. Rotowire.com Monday, 10:00 pm

  • Robert Suarez gets eighth save versus Rockies
Robert Suarez picked up his eighth save with a scoreless ninth against the Rockies on Monday.

Advice: Suarez got into trouble by allowing a double and a single with one out, but Sean Bouchard didn’t try to score from second on the single, since it was a two-run game anyway, and Suarez then induced a double-play ball from Ryan McMahon to end the contest. Suarez has pitched two straight days, so if the Padres have another save chance Tuesday, it could go to Enyel De Los Santos or Yuki Matsui. Rotoworld Monday, 8:19 pm
