    • Max Scherzer (thumb) receives cortisone injection
Max Scherzer received a cortisone injection in his right thumb on Wednesday.

Advice: Scherzer underwent additional testing earlier this week that revealed his thumb issue to be nerve-related, not structural. It’s an encouraging development that he’s reportedly experiencing significant improvement following the additional treatment. The 39-year-old righty was able to resume playing catch on Friday without any issues. He’ll presumably need a couple rehab outings before making it back to the Rangers’ starting rotation mix. • Receives cortisone injection
Scherzer (back) revealed Friday that he received a cortisone injection in his right thumb after undergoing additional tests Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: The exam revealed that Scherzer's thumb issue is more nerve-related than skeletal, and the right-hander noticed significant improvement following the injection. Scherzer noted that he passed multiple strength tests that would have indicated a ligament issue, and his rehab plan has changed accordingly. The 39-year-old was on the field Friday playing catch for the first time since having his program delayed due to issues with his right thumb and forearm. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:20 am

    • Joe Musgrove (triceps) plays catch on Friday
Joe Musgrove (triceps) played catch on Friday at Petco Park.

Advice: It’s a positive development for Musgrove that he’s resumed throwing already after landing on the injured list back on May 5 with triceps tendinitis. The 31-year-old righty is likely going to need a couple weeks to ramp up his throwing program, but it doesn’t sound like he’s facing a lengthy absence. Nothing official, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him back in June. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:17 am

    • Servais: Bryan Woo (forearm) to make next start
Mariners manager Scott Servais said late Friday that he expects Bryan Woo (forearm) to make his next start.

Advice: All indications are that Woo will make his next start on Wednesday against the Royals after making a precautionary exit from Friday’s return outing against the Athletics after experiencing forearm tightness during an extended break between the fourth and fifth innings. His fastball velocity dipped significantly in the fifth inning following the layoff, which led to a visit from Seattle’s training staff and his removal from the contest. It doesn’t sound like a serious concern at this juncture, but it’s certainly a situation fantasy managers should monitor closely. There should be some clarity on his status at some point in the coming days when he throws his usual between-starts bullpen session. Stay tuned. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:03 am

    • Stuck with tough loss Friday
Kikuchi (2-3) took the loss Friday as the Blue Jays were downed 3-2 by the Twins, giving up two runs on four hits over eight innings. He struck out three without walking a batter.

Advice: The left-hander pounded the strike zone, firing 68 of 97 pitches for strikes in his fifth quality start of the year, and he generated plenty of weak contact -- even Carlos Santana's solo homer in the fifth inning had a sub-100 mph exit velocity and barely made it over the fence down the right-field line. It was the longest outing of Kikuchi's Toronto tenure, and his longest MLB start since he gave the Mariners a shutout win in August 2019, which coincidentally was against the Jays. Kikuchi will take a 2.64 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 46:9 K:BB through 47.2 innings into his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Baltimore. • Battling forearm tightness
Woo said after Friday's 8-1 win over the Athletics that he has been dealing with tightness in his forearm, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Advice: Woo acknowledged that he experienced forearm tightness during his recent minor-league rehab outings, but the issue didn't prevent the Mariners from activating him from the 15-day injured list Friday ahead of his 2024 MLB debut. The right-hander struck out three and allowed just one hit and one walk over 4.1 innings Friday, but he ended up being pulled as a precaution after the forearm tightness cropped up again. Mariners manager Scott Servais said he expects Woo to be fine, and for now, the expectation is that the 24-year-old will make his next start, which is expected to come Wednesday against Kansas City. • Lance Lynn surrenders five runs to Brewers
Lance Lynn gave up five runs — four earned — in 4 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Brewers.

Advice: It’s rather remarkable than Lynn has a 3.79 ERA with significantly worse-than-usual strikeout and walk numbers, but it’s a product of him having given up only five homers, compared to 12 barrels. Last year, he allowed 44 homers and 56 barrels. In 2022, when he missed one-third of the season, he allowed 19 homers and 24 barrels. Things figure to pick up in the home run department as the season goes along, which doesn’t bode well at all for Lynn remaining an effective pitcher. Rotoworld Friday, 9:38 pm

    • Strikes out season-high 11
King allowed two hits and three walks while striking out a season-high 11 over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday.

Advice: King put four runners on base but also racked up eight strikeouts over his first three innings. He ended up missing out on the win after Yuki Matsui allowed the game-tying run in the eighth inning. King was unsteady late in April, but he's opened May with 13 scoreless innings. The right-hander has a 3.67 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 54:24 K:BB through 49 innings over nine appearances (eight starts) this season. King is penciled in for a more favorable home matchup versus the Rockies his next time out. Rotowire.com Friday, 9:34 pm

    • Blanks Tampa for fourth win
Schmidt (4-1) earned the win Friday over the Rays, allowing five hits and two walks over 6.2 scoreless innings. He struck out six.

Advice: It's the first quality start of the season for Schmidt, as he hadn't pitched more than 5.2 innings prior to Friday, but he's won three of his last four outings. The 28-year-old lowered his ERA to 2.95 with a 1.27 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB across eight starts (42.2 innings) this season. He's currently slated for a road matchup with the Twins in his next start.
