Musgrove (elbow) is expected to play catch Wednesday or Thursday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Advice: This will be the first time Musgrove has thrown since he went on the injured list June 1 due to a bone spur in his right elbow. The right-hander acknowledged that his new slider may have contributed to the issue and indicated Saturday that he is considering how to alter either the grip or his wrist action on the pitch. Musgrove also shared that he is working to change the landing on his delivery in order to reduce the stress on his arm, saying, "I do think that that delivery, like the release point and like how it's coming out of my hand right now, now that it's aggravated, I've got to try to make some kind of adjustment to not re-aggravate it without having months of rest time and let it calm down. I gotta find a way to adjust." There's still a possibility that the veteran hurler could need surgery to remove the bone spur, but even if he avoids that scenario, he probably won't be ready to rejoin the Padres until late July. Advice: Dunning failed to complete five innings for the fourth time in his last six starts, getting pulled with two outs in the fifth Sunday after allowing Josh Rojas to hit a double and score from second on a wild pitch before walking Julio Rodriguez. While Dunning hasn't surrendered more than five hits in an outing this season, he's had plenty of issues with the long ball, allowing 1.7 HR/9. The 29-year-old has flashed the best strikeout stuff of his career with a 10.2 K/9, but his lack of depth and vulnerability to home runs makes him incredibly volatile. Dane Dunning allowed two runs over 4 2/3 innings and struck out eight before being lifted from his start against the Mariners on Sunday.

Advice: Dunning’s K rate this year has been quite encouraging — he’s fanned 67 in 59 innings — but the extra homers and extra walks he’s given up have made him a far less effective pitcher than he was last year. If he remains in the rotation and has more luck with homers, he still might be a factor in mixed leagues after the break. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told reporters on Sunday that as long as Max Scherzer bounces back alright following his minor league rehab start on Saturday, he’ll join the Rangers’ rotation and make his 2024 regular season debut during the upcoming week.
