      Cano gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his second save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Craig Kimbrel worked the seventh inning and faced the bottom of the Arizona order, a strong sign that at least for the moment, manager Brandon Hyde is focused on building the veteran closer's confidence back up rather than throwing him into the fire in the ninth. Due to Kimbrel's recent struggles, Cano has picked up both his 2024 saves in his last three appearances, but Jacob Webb and Danny Coulombe have also collected saves in the last couple weeks, although the former's came in the 12th inning. Even if the O's turn to a committee to protect leads at the end of games, Cano figures to see the majority of save chances until Kimbrel proves he's ready to resume his usual role.     • Lance Lynn surrenders five runs to Brewers
      Lance Lynn gave up five runs — four earned — in 4 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Brewers.

      Advice: It’s rather remarkable than Lynn has a 3.79 ERA with significantly worse-than-usual strikeout and walk numbers, but it’s a product of him having given up only five homers, compared to 12 barrels. Last year, he allowed 44 homers and 56 barrels. In 2022, when he missed one-third of the season, he allowed 19 homers and 24 barrels.       Lynn (1-1) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against Milwaukee. He had five strikeouts.

      Advice: Lynn cruised through the Brewers order once -- going nine up, nine down in his first three innings. However, the wheels fell off in the fifth inning as the 36-year-old labored through two outs before receiving the hook. Matthew Liberatore provided no help as he allowed both inherited runners from Lynn to score. Lynn has struggled over his past four starts, pitching to the tune of a 5.49 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 19:11 K:BB over 19.2 innings. He looks to bounce back in his next start on the road against the Angels.       Advice: Valdez allowed two runs on a Matt Vierling double in the third inning before blanking Detroit over his final four frames en route to his second victory of the year. It's an encouraging bounce-back effort from Valdez, who allowed five runs in a loss to Seattle in his previous start. The left-hander lowered his ERA to 3.64 with a 1.35 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB across five starts (29.2 innings).       Kyle Tucker blasted his league-leading 12th home run on Friday night, helping to power the Astros to a 5-2 victory over the Tigers in the opener of their three-game set in Motown.

      Advice: Tucker finally got the Astros on the board in this one with his 409-foot (106.0 mph EV) solo shot off of Casey Mize in the sixth inning. He also drew a pair of walks and scored twice in the contest, finishing the night 1-for-3.       Framber Valdez pitched well in Friday night’s victory over the Tigers, allowing only two runs on six hits over seven frames.

      Advice: Valdez walked two and punched out four on the night. He surrendered a two-run double to Matt Vierling in the third inning, but kept the Tigers’ off the board the remainder of his night — affording his offense the opportunity to come back and earn him a win, which they finally did in the eighth inning. The 30-year-old southpaw got 10 swings and misses on 103 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 23 percent. He’ll look to replicate this fine outing as he carries a 3.64 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 23/9 K/BB ratio (29 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Athletics.
