  • Tarik Skubal gives up two homers in loss to Braves
    Tarik Skubal surrendered five runs — four earned — in four innings Wednesday in a loss to the Braves.

    Advice: Skubal struck out seven and gave up only five hard-hit balls. Unfortunately, two of those hard-hit balls went 426 and 407 feet, as Skubal allowed two homers for just the second time this season.   • Takes second straight loss
    Skubal (8-3) took the loss Wednesday against Atlanta, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out seven.

    Advice: Most of the damage against Skubal came via the long ball Wednesday -- he gave up a two-run homer to Sean Murphy in the third inning before Ramon Laureano tacked on a solo shot in the fourth. The 27-year-old Skubal has now lost back-to-back starts for the first time this season -- he's given up eight earned runs over 10.1 innings in that span. The left-hander still sports a solid 2.50 ERA on the year with a 0.97 WHIP and 105:18 K:BB across 90 innings. Skubal is lined up for another tough matchup next week at home versus the Phillies.   • Secures save Tuesday
    Miller struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Royals.

    Advice: Miller took a blown save in his last outing, though it was because he allowed an inherited runner to score. He's struggled a bit lately, allowing nine runs (six earned) with a 16:7 K:BB across 12.1 innings over his last 10 appearances. He's still performing quite well in the closer role for the Athletics, pitching to a 2.20 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 57:12 K:BB over 32.2 innings while going 13-for-15 in save chances this year.   • Mason Miller perfect in ninth for 13th save
    Mason Miller recorded his 13th save with a scoreless ninth against the Royals on Tuesday.

    Advice: Miller had it easy tonight, getting one strikeout and a pair of routine flies. He’s had some hiccups of late, but he remains about as good of a bet as any reliever from an ERA and strikeout perspective. Rotoworld Tuesday, 9:55 pm

  • Short outing vs. Mariners
    McKenzie (3-4) took the loss Tuesday against Seattle, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks over 2.1 innings without recording a strikeout.

    Advice: After holding the Mariners scoreless through his first two innings, McKenzie allowed five of the first six batters to reach safely in the third, ultimately surrendering four runs before the Guardians turned to the bullpen. The 26-year-old McKenzie has struggled of late -- he hasn't made it through six innings in five straight starts, posting a 7.04 ERA in that span. Overall, his ERA is up to 4.48 on the season with a 1.46 WHIP and 65:42 K:BB across 70.1 innings.   • McKenzie can’t escape third inning in loss
    Triston McKenzie allowed four runs on three hits in 2 1/3 while walking four and striking out nobody in a loss to the Mariners.

    Advice: This is now the fifth straight subpar start for McKenzie, who had an uptick in velocity tonight but saw no benefit from it. We know he’s pitching through an injury, and he’s just clearly not healthy when he’s out there on the mound right now. He didn’t throw a single slider in the strike zone tonight and had just a 40 percent zone rate overall. With Gavin Williams on the way back, you have to wonder if McKenzie might be in jeopardy of losing his spot in the rotation. He’ll take a 4.48 ERA into an okay matchup against the Blue Jays this weekend, but he’s simply tough to trust right now. Rotoworld Tuesday, 7:20 pm
     
  • Plagued by long ball
    Singer (4-4) took the loss Sunday against the Dodgers, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks across six innings. He struck out four.

    Advice: All three runs charged to Singer came via home run, with Shohei Ohtani slugging a solo shot in the third inning and going back-to-back with Freddie Freeman in the sixth inning. Sunday's start was Singer's first allowing multiple home runs and was his second time in seven appearances completing six innings. Through 14 outings, Singer owns a 3.39 ERA and a 76:23 K:BB across 77 innings. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Rangers in Arlington next weekend. Rotowire.com Sunday, 8:41 pm
     
  • Tosses eight scoreless frames
    Gilbert (4-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing two hits and no walks with nine strikeouts over eight scoreless innings against Texas.

    Advice: Gilbert generated 21 whiffs Sunday, punching out eight batters for the fourth time this season while blanking the Rangers. The 27-year-old has now gone deeper than six innings in three straight starts and has walked merely one batter across his last 33.2 innings. He's tied with Corbin Burnes and Tanner Houck for the league lead with 12 quality starts and paces MLB with 98.1 innings pitched.   • Logan Gilbert dominates Rangers in 5-0 game
    Logan Gilbert allowed two hits and walked none over eight innings in the Mariners’ 5-0 shutout of the Rangers on Sunday.

    Advice: Gilbert recorded 21 whiffs and nine strikeouts in one of the best outings of his still rather young career. He’s 12-for-15 giving the Mariners quality starts this year, which would seem to warrant better than 4-4 record. His 2.93 ERA ranks 15th in the majors, but his 0.92 WHIP places fifth.
