      Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Alvarez (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.

      Advice: Mendoza offered that Alvarez will catch 5-to-7 innings in his first game with Binghamton and build up from there. Alvarez is five weeks removed from undergoing surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb.       Francisco Alvarez (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday.

      Advice: That according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, who also told reporters the catcher is expected to be behind the plate for five to seven innings. Alvarez was able to take batting practice over the weekend, and the 22-year-old backstop was reportedly hitting the ball hard as he works his way back from the thumb injury that has kept him out since April.     • Looking good in batting practice
      Alvarez (thumb) was reaching exit velocities over 100 miles per hour during batting practice over the weekend, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: The 22-year-old catcher is still wearing a splint on his surgically repaired thumb, however, and the Mets aren't going to rush him back from the 10-day injured list. The team may also use his recovery period to have him work on his positioning behind the plate, as Alvarez has a tendency to be overeager reaching for pitches and is susceptible to getting his glove hand smacked by a swing.       Jones (back/knee) took batting practice and completed light outfield drills prior to Monday's game, MLB.com reports.

      Advice: This was significant progress for Jones, marking the first time he swung a bat since his first rehab assignment was halted when he experienced knee inflammation.     • Belts fourth homer in win
      Bichette went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's win over the White Sox.

      Advice: He took Nick Nastrini deep in the fourth inning, one of three long balls for Toronto on the day. Bichette is batting .424 (14-for-33) over the last eight games, boosting his slash line on the season to .247/.297/.366 with four homers, four steals, 18 runs and 23 RBI through 50 contests.       Steele did not factor into the decision Monday against Milwaukee, allowing three hits and one walk over seven shutout innings. He struck out eight.

      Advice: Steele posted his best start since returning from a hamstring injury May 6, generating 13 whiffs in 93 total pitches. The Cubs lefty limited a ferocious Brewers offense that entered with the fourth-best team wRC+ at 115, allowing Milwaukee to scatter only four singles.       Justin Steele threw seven shutout innings and got a no-decision against the Brewers on Monday.



      Advice: Steele allowed three hits, a walk and struck out eight. He looked like the pitcher we saw last year who had a 3.06 ERA and 176 strikeouts. Steele lowered his ERA to 4.45, but there should still be room for growth as his xFIP is 3.71. The 28-year-old left-hander is set to face the Reds on the road this weekend.

    • Picks up another shaky save
      Helsley allowed a run on three hits in one inning but earned the save in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Cubs. He struck out a batter in the outing.

      Advice: Helsley ran into trouble against the Cubs for the second consecutive night and was still able to escape with a save. He allowed a leadoff home run to Ian Happ and then gave up back-to-back two-out singles before getting Seiya Suzuki to end things with a fly out. That's now seven hits and three runs given up by Helsley over his last two appearances, though both still turned into saves. He's tied with Emmanuel Clase atop baseball with 17 saves and still owns excellent overall numbers with a 2.25 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 25:4 K:BB in 24 innings. Rotowire.com Monday, 5:43 am

      Carroll went 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple and a run scored in Sunday's 3-1 loss to Miami.

      Advice: Arizona's offense couldn't get anything going until Carroll tripled and scored in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was the outfielder's fourth triple of the season, all coming within the last eight games.
