Player Notes

  • Sharp in second win
Valdez (2-1) earned the win Friday over the Tigers, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out four.

Advice: Valdez allowed two runs on a Matt Vierling double in the third inning before blanking Detroit over his final four frames en route to his second victory of the year. It's an encouraging bounce-back effort from Valdez, who allowed five runs in a loss to Seattle in his previous start. The left-hander lowered his ERA to 3.64 with a 1.35 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB across five starts (29.2 innings). Valdez is currently scheduled for a home matchup with the A's in his next outing. • Ranger Suárez dominates again in win over Marlins
Ranger Suárez delivered yet another dominant performance in Friday night’s victory over the Marlins, racking up nine strikeouts over seven innings of shutout baseball.

Advice: The 28-year-old southpaw scattered just three hits on the evening while issuing two free passes. While two of the three hits that he allowed were doubles, the Marlins never seriously threatened against him. Suárez got nine swings and misses on 97 pitches on the night, posting an elite CSW of 36 percent. He now sits at 7-0 on the season with an impeccable 1.50 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and a 55/8 K/BB ratio over 54 innings through his first eight starts. He’ll look to keep the good times rolling when he takes the mound against the Mets on Wednesday night. Rotoworld 8 minutes ago
  • Trevor Rogers demolished in loss to Phillies
Trevor Rogers was demolished in Friday night’s loss to the Phillies, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work.

Advice: Woof. Rogers struck out three and walked two during the abbreviated outing. The Phillies scored twice in the second inning — including a solo blast by Nick Castellanos — then really broke it open by scoring three more runs while chasing Rogers in the fourth inning. The 26-year-old southpaw got nine swings and misses on 81 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 27 percent. He’ll attempt to improve upon his grotesque 6.57 ERA and 1.86 WHIP when he takes on the struggling offense of the Tigers on Wednesday in Detroit. It’s the classic, stoppable force meets moveable object scenario. Something has to give. Rotoworld 8 minutes ago
  • Joe Ryan keeps Blue Jays quiet in victory
Joe Ryan pitched seven innings of one-run ball Friday in the Twins’ 3-2 defeat of the Blue Jays.

Advice: The lone run was a 365-foot homer from Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The ball barely rated as hard hit, leaving his bat at 95.5 mph, and was a homer in only 11 ballparks. It’s Ryan’s fourth straight quality start, and he still hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in a game this season. Alas, the win tonight was only his second. Ryan will face the Yankees next. • Jhoan Duran gets hold against Blue Jays
Jhoan Duran pitched a hitless eighth against the Blue Jays for his third hold Friday.

Advice: Everything seemed great when Duran notched saves in his first two appearances back from the IL, but he’s been asked to pitch the eighth in three of four outings since. It’s strictly a leverage thing, but it’s annoying for us fantasy leaguers. Duran has been practically perfect since being activated, allowing a total of two hits in six scoreless innings. • Griffin Jax earns fifth save for Twins
Griffin Jax recorded his fifth save despite giving up a run in the ninth to the Blue Jays on Friday.

Advice: The Twins again opted to give Jhoan Duran what looked like the tougher assignment in the eighth. Jax came in with a two-run lead in the ninth and allowed a walk and two singles before finishing off the Blue Jays. He’s going to retain some value in deeper mixed leagues if the Twins keep using Duran like this. Rotoworld 17 minutes ago
  • Yusei Kikuchi goes eight in tough loss to Twins
Yusei Kikuchi took a tough loss Friday after limiting the Twins to two runs over eight innings.

Advice: Kikuchi allowed four hits, walked none and struck out three. He currently has a 5.1 K:BB ratio (46/9 in 47 2/3 IP). He came in at 2.4 in his first four years in MLB before finishing at 3.8 in his breakthrough 2023 campaign. Rotoworld 17 minutes ago
  • Clay Holmes walks tightrope, escapes with save
Clay Holmes walked the tightrope in the ninth inning on Friday night, but escaped with his 12th save of the season after stranding the bases loaded with a two-run lead.

Advice: Holmes — who has yet to allow an earned run through 17 1/3 innings to begin the season — really had to work in this one. He issued a leadoff walk to Yandy Díaz and a one-out walk to Josh Lowe — striking out Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes in-between. He then allowed a two-out single to Austin Shenton that loaded the bases before striking out Jonny DeLuca after a six-pitch battle to end it. He now paces the league with 12 saves and has a 21/3 K/BB ratio to go along with it. Rotoworld 42 minutes ago
  • Clarke Schmidt outduels Taj Bradley in win Friday
Clarke Schmidt outdueled Taj Bradley in Friday evening’s victory over the Rays, scattering five hits over 6 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

Advice: The 28-year-old hurler struck out six batters on the evening while walking a pair. The only real threat against him came in the fifth inning where he allowed a two-out single to Richie Palacios and walked Jose Caballero, but he punched out Alex Jackson to quell the uprising. Schmidt generated 14 swings and misses on 87 pitches in the game — five each on his sweeper and cutter — while posting a CSW of 34 percent. He’ll bring a stellar 2.95 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and a 47/15 K/BB ratio (42 2/3 innings) into Thursday’s showdown against the Twins in Minnesota. Rotoworld 43 minutes ago
