  • Moves off 40-man roster
The Reds designated Thompson for assignment Thursday.

Advice: Since the end of the 2023 season, Thompson has now been DFA'd on four occasions; twice by the Reds, and one apiece by the Yankees and Twins. Thompson won a spot on the Reds' Opening Day roster and hit .111 over 18 at-bats in 17 games before he was sent to Double-A Chattanooga on May 7. The 25-year-old outfielder had posted a .557 OPS in nine games since reporting to Chattanooga and was deemed expendable from the 40-man roster with the Reds opting to clear a spot for right-hander Brett Kennedy, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Louisville. • Rehab assignment continuing
Andujar (knee) is slated to remain at Triple-A Las Vegas for several more rehab games, per the Associated Press, and he went 0-for-4 with a walk in the Aviators' loss to Tacoma on Wednesday.

Advice: Andujar put in a full game's worth of plate appearances at designated hitter, and he's apparently set to spend at least a few more days with Las Vegas before activation is considered. The veteran has played four games with the Aviators so far, hitting .357 (5-for-14) with three doubles, five RBI, Wednesday's walk and a run. However, he's only played defense in one of those contests, logging six innings in left field against El Paso on Saturday. Rotowire.com Today, 9:21 am
  • Fraley remains out of Reds lineup on Thursday
Jake Fraley (hand) is out of the lineup on Thursday with Nick Martini starting in right field again.

Advice: Fraley was hit on the hand on Tuesday but the x-rays came back negative. He’s still dealing with some soreness, so the Reds will give him another day off with Nick Martini in the lineup hitting sixth. Rotoworld Today, 9:19 am
  • TJ Friedl hopes to take batting practice soon
According to The Enquirer’s Charlie Goldsmith, TJ Friedl (broken thumb) “continues to progress” and hopes to take “batting practice soon.”

Advice: TJ Friedl is back to hitting off flips as he works back from a broken thumb. Once he is able to take batting practice, his next step will likely be live at-bats and a rehab assignment. It’s possible that he could be back around mid-June but it will depend on how his thumb feels while taking live swings. Rotoworld Today, 9:15 am
  • Rowdy Tellez starting versus lefty
Rowdy Tellez is starting for the Pirates and hitting seventh despite facing a left-handed pitcher.

Advice: The Pirates opted to sit Jack Suwinski against a lefty but instead of playing either Michael A. Taylor or Edward Olivares in the outfield, they decided to let Connor Joe play the outfield and put Tellez at first. Both Olivares and Taylor played on Wednesday night against a left-handed starter, so it’s possible that the team decided to give them a day off, but it’s telling that the club would rather have Tellez play against a lefty than Suwinski or have either of those outfielders play two days in a row. Tellez is hitting just .181/.250/.233 on the season and is not a recommended play in any fantasy leagues. Rotoworld Today, 9:10 am
  • Not in Thursday's lineup
D'Arnaud is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

Advice: He started the first two contest of the series, but with Thursday's finale being a day game, d'Arnaud will get a breather. Atlanta will go with Chadwick Tromp as its catcher for starting pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver. Rotowire.com Today, 8:53 am
  • Retreats to bench Thursday
Short is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

Advice: Austin Riley (side) remains out of the lineup for a 10th consecutive game, but after starting each of the previous nine games in Riley's stead, Short will give way to Luke Williams at third base Thursday. Atlanta is still seemingly viewing Riley as day-to-day, so Short's run of regular playing time at the hot corner could come to an end as soon as this weekend in Pittsburgh. • Missing another start
Riley (side) is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

Advice: He'll remain on the bench for a 10th consecutive game while he continues to heal up from a left intercostal strain. Atlanta had initially viewed Riley as day-to-day when he departed an April 12 game against the Mets with the injury, but the club likely would have placed him on the 10-day injured list had they known the issue would have kept him out for more than a week. Riley was able to exhibit a sign of progress by taking swings on the field Tuesday, but it's not clear if he'll be on track to rejoin the starting nine during this weekend's three-game series in Pittsburgh. • Jake Cronenworth playing 2B for Padres on Thursday
Jake Cronenworth is starting at second base for the first time in the 2024 season.

Advice: This felt inevitable after the Padres traded for Luis Arraez, who is a well below-average defensive second baseman. Arraez will now slide to first base with Cronenworth moving to second. Cronenworth has been an above-average defensive second baseman over the last four seasons, so this move doesn’t figure to hurt the Padres at all and could be a boost for their pitchers.
