• Struggles early against Texas
Abbott (1-3) was tagged with the loss after he pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out seven in Sunday's 4-3 defeat to the Rangers.

Advice: Abbott struggled early, surrendering a pair of two-run home runs in the first inning, including an inside-the-park homer to Wyatt Langford, which gave the Rangers a 4-0 lead. The left-hander was able to settle down after the difficult first frame, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings to end his outing. Abbott entered Sunday having given up two or fewer runs in each of his five starts in 2024, but he'll now carry a 3.27 ERA into his next projected start Saturday at home versus the Orioles. • Garrett Whitlock (oblique) not throwing off mound
Red Sox’ manager Alex Cora told reporters on Sunday that Garrett Whitlock (oblique) has yet to be cleared to throw off of a mound.

Advice: Cora noted that Whitlock is still feeling his oblique issue a bit, and while he has been playing catch, he’s not quite ready for a throwing progression. There remains no clear timetable for his return to the Red Sox’ rotation. Rotoworld 19 minutes ago

  • Bello expected back “sooner rather than later”
Red Sox’ skipper Alex Cora told reporters on Sunday that Brayan Bello (lat) is making great progress in his recovery and is expected back “sooner rather than later”.

Advice: That certainly qualifies as an encouraging update for the injured right-hander. It’s unclear if Bello will require a minor league rehab start or not before rejoining the Red Sox rotation, but it’s sounding like he could be ready to be activated from the injured list when first eligible, or shortly after. • José Quintana gets through eight against Cardinals
José Quintana surrendered only run and three hits over eight innings Sunday against the Cardinals.

Advice: Quintana hadn’t lasted longer than 5 2/3 innings in any of his five starts this season before getting through eight against the feeble Cardinals today. This lowers his ERA to 3.48, but we wouldn’t trust him as a mixed-league guy right now. Rotoworld 36 minutes ago

  • Lance Lynn holds Mets to one run in no-decision
Lance Lynn allowed one run over five innings Sunday in a no-decision versus the Mets.

Advice: Lynn struck out three and walked three today. He has a 2.64 ERA, but he’s doing it with his worst strikeout rate since 2017 and his highest walk rate since 2018. Odds are that he’s going to have some difficulties going forward. Rotoworld 36 minutes ago

  • Weathers falls apart in 4th against Nationals
Ryan Weathers allowed six runs on five hits in four innings in a no-decision against the Nationals on Sunday.

Advice: Weathers had allowed no runs on one hit over the first three innings, but the wheels fell off in the fourth inning when Weathers allowed five runs on four hits and a walk. He was brought out for the fifth inning but hit the first batter he faced and was removed from the game. It’s hard to punish the young lefty too much for one bad inning, and the injuries throughout the Marlins’ staff mean that it’s likely Weathers will face the A’s next week. He should bounceback in that spot. Rotoworld 39 minutes ago

  • Throws bullpen session
Javier (neck) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The right-hander landed on the injured list last Sunday with neck discomfort, but it's encouraging he's back on the mound a week later. Javier will be eligible to be activated during next weekend's three game series versus the Mariners, though it remains to be seen if he's game ready at that point. Rotowire.com 41 minutes ago
  • Corbin struggles against Marlins on Sunday
Patrick Corbin allowed seven runs (four earned) on eight hits in four innings in a no-decision against the Marlins.

Advice: Corbin’s slider was good, posting a 43 percent whiff rate on the day, but he also struggled to locate it for called strikes and none of the other pitches were fooling the Marlins’ hitters on Sunday. Corbin now has a 6.82 ERA this season and can’t be trusted against any offense, including the Blue Jays next weekend. Rotoworld 43 minutes ago

  • Roughed up in loss
Wacha (1-3) was saddled with the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings against the Tigers. He struck out three.

Advice: Wacha was given an early one-run lead before he even took the hill but gave up three runs in the first two innings and four total while the Royals were only able to support him with that one first-inning tally. The veteran righty entered the day having allowed just two home runs over his first 28.1 innings but was tagged for two homers and two doubles amongst the nine hits allowed. Wacha's next start is tentatively scheduled to take place next week during a weekend set at home against the Rangers. Rotowire.com 48 minutes ago
