• Luis Arraez scores two runs in win over Cubs
Luis Arraez went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored on Wednesday, leading the Padres to a 3-0 victory over the Cubs.

Advice: Arraez wound up reaching base safely in two of his four plate appearances, crossing the plate in the first and fifth innings, respectively, on run-scoring hits from teammates Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth. The 27-year-old batting title contender has a pair of multi-hit performances in five contests since arriving last week in San Diego. Rotoworld 46 minutes ago

  • Davis Schneider reaches three times in Jays’ win
David Schneider went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk against the Phillies on Wednesday.

Advice: Schneider was in the starting lineup for the ninth time in the last 10 games. That’s quite a change from the start of the year, when he played in just three of the first 10. Also, all six of his starts at second base have come since Apr. 17. None of this was part of John Schneider’s plan, but the manager hasn’t had much choice, what with Davis producing and so many others struggling. Rotoworld 54 minutes ago

  • Brice Turang collects three hits in Brewers’ loss
Brice Turang went 3-for-4 with an RBI on Wednesday in the Brewers’ loss to the Royals.

Advice: Turang capped off a three-hit performance with a run-scoring double off Royals reliever Tyler Duffey in the ninth inning, but wound up being stranded in scoring position representing the potential tying run. The 24-year-old speedster has made the most of his opportunity this season, emerging as Milwaukee’s everyday second baseman, posting an .826 OPS with two homers and 14 steals through 34 contests so far. • Removed from 40-man roster
The Red Sox designated Short for assignment Wednesday.

Advice: Short has been swapped off the 26-man active roster in favor of utility man Romy Gonzalez (wrist), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. He'll also lose his spot on the 40-man roster, as Short had no minor-league options remaining and will thus have to be subjected to the waiver process before potentially heading to the Red Sox's top affiliate in Worcester. Short played in just two games for the Red Sox, going 0-for-7 with four strikeouts. Rotowire.com Today, 1:19 pm

  • Checking out of starting nine
Lopez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.

Advice: Lopez recently overcame a sore adductor and started at second base in the first two contests of the series in Tampa, going 2-for-7 at the plate. The White Sox haven't indicated that Lopez suffered a setback with the injury, so his absence Wednesday is presumably maintenance-related. Rotowire.com Today, 1:17 pm

  • Returns from injured list
The Red Sox activated Gonzalez (wrist) from the 10-day injured list. He'll start at first base and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against Atlanta.

Advice: Gonzalez missed nearly a month of action with a left wrist sprain but has been cleared to return after playing three minor-league rehab games. He'll fill a utility role with Boston and is likely to see the majority of his starts versus left-handed pitching. Rotowire.com Today, 1:16 pm

  • Checks back into starting nine
Espinal will start at third base and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Espinal saw a streak of six consecutive starts come to an end in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to Arizona, and before that, he enjoyed a stretch of 11 consecutive starts. He looks as though he could fall into regular playing time once again, as the Reds placed Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Jeimer Candelario will move over from his usual spot at third base to cover Encarnacion-Strand's post at first base, opening up the hot corner for Espinal. Despite seeing plenty of usage in his utility role this season, Espinal has provided the Reds with underwhelming numbers (.169 average, one home run, four stolen bases, 12 RBI and five runs) across 90 plate appearances. • Jared Triolo goes 0-for-4 against Angels
Jared Triolo finished 0-for-4 in the loss to the Angels on Wednesday.

Advice: We figured Triolo would prove to be a solid bat for the Pirates, but he’s come in at just .206/.293/.250 to date. Last year, he had 12 extra-base hits in 181 at-bats as a rookie. Right now, he has three in 120 at-bats. Nick Gonzales has been terrific in Triple-A, so maybe it’s time for the Pirates to try something different at second base. Rotoworld Today, 12:19 pm

  • Moving into regular role
Newman will start at shortstop and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Reds.

Advice: Newman will make his third straight start at shortstop -- all against right-handed pitching -- and looks to have supplanted Blaze Alexander as the Diamondbacks' preferred option at the position while the team waits for Geraldo Perdomo (knee) to return from the injured list. Though he's turned in a poor .559 OPS through 62 plate appearances with Arizona this season, Newman has been a much more polished defender at shortstop than Alexander. Rotowire.com Today, 12:18 pm
