• Activated and optioned
The Cubs reinstated Palencia (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa on Monday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Advice: Palencia will stick around with Iowa after he made six rehab appearances with the affiliate while he was on the shelf with a right shoulder strain. Though Palencia struck out eight over 4.2 scoreless innings across the last four appearances, the Cubs didn't have room for the right-hander in the bullpen. Palencia should rank high on the list for a call-up the next time the Cubs require an extra relief arm. Rotowire.com 29 minutes ago
  • Cubs activate and option Daniel Palencia on Monday
Cubs activated RHP Daniel Palencia from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: The 24-year-old hurler had already been at Triple-A Iowa on a minor league rehab assignment, so he’ll remain there while he continues to hone his craft. Palencia has posted a 6.55 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and a 12/8 K/BB ratio over 11 innings in seven appearances with the Cubs this season. Rotoworld 31 minutes ago
  • Heating back up
DeJong went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI on Sunday against the Brewers.

Advice: DeJong began the day with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and popped a leadoff homer three frames later. He went deep four times in a 12-game span through mid-May and has now gone yard twice in the last three games. DeJong has a 34.2 percent strikeout rate across 184 plate appearances this season, which will prevent consistent production, but he's hit .245 with a .766 OPS and six home runs since the start of May. • Nabs fifth steal
Vargas went 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Guardians.

Advice: Getting another start at shortstop in place of CJ Abrams (shoulder) and batting ninth, Vargas swiped his fifth bag of the season in a productive afternoon. Abrams could be back in the lineup as soon as Monday against the Mets, bumping Vargas back to the bench, but the veteran utility player has been effective when called upon this season, slashing .288/.368/.385 through 120 plate appearances. • Promotion could be coming
Vespi will travel with the Orioles to Toronto for their upcoming series against the Blue Jays and could be formally recalled from Triple-A Norfolk as soon as Monday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Advice: Vespi hasn't officially been promoted yet, but the move appears to be imminent. The left-handed reliever has made one appearance with the Orioles this season, tossing a scoreless frame in St. Louis on May 22. Rotowire.com Today, 7:03 am

  • Tracking toward brief IL stint
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that he's hopeful Gonzalez will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list around when he's first eligible to be activated, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Advice: Gonzalez was joined on the IL on Sunday by fellow infielder Vaughn Grissom, who is recovering from a right hamstring strain. Grissom's injury is believed to be the more significant of the two, as he'll be sent in for an MRI, whereas Gonzalez won't be subject to any further imaging. Assuming the tightness in his left leg subsides in the coming days and he's able to resume baseball activities, Gonzalez could be ready to return from the IL for the Red Sox's three-game series with the Phillies that begins June 11. In the meantime, the Red Sox are likely to lean on Enmanuel Valdez and Jamie Westbrook as the main options at second base, with the former occupying the strong side of a platoon. • Keaton Winn may not need rehab start
Giants’ manager Bob Melvin told reporters on Sunday that Keaton Winn (forearm) may not require a minor league rehab start before rejoining the team’s rotation.

Advice: With Blake Snell (groin) heading back to the injured list, the Giants have a gaping hole to fill in their rotation and Winn could be ready to fill the void. The 26-year-old right-hander has been shelved since May 15 due to a mild right forearm strain. He was supposed to make at least one rehab start at Triple-A Sacramento, but it sounds like the Giants may need to utilize him at the big league level instead. Either way, expect his pitch count to be limited in his first couple of starts back. Rotoworld Today, 6:42 am

  • Works in relief Saturday
Garabito struck out one and allowed two hits and one walk over a scoreless inning out of the bullpen in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Marlins.

Advice: After giving up one run in a 3.2-inning start in his MLB debut May 26 versus the Twins, Garabito went nearly a week without any usage before he finished off Saturday's blowout win. Despite making his most recent appearance in relief, Garabito could be an option to make another start either Tuesday or Wednesday versus the Tigers, with Dane Dunning presumably taking the hill for one of those games and Garabito or Urena getting the nod for the other contest. Texas could get Jon Gray (groin) back from the injured list as soon as this weekend, so Garabito likely won't be in line for any additional starts in the near future if he does in fact re-enter the rotation against Detroit. • Braves option Chadwick Tromp to Triple-A
Braves optioned C Chadwick Tromp to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: With Travis d’Arnaud and Sean Murphy both healthy, there’s simply no room for Tromp on the big league roster at the moment. Tromp has hit .250/.259/.365 with zero homers and six RBI in 54 plate appearances with the Braves this season. He’ll continue to bide his time at the Triple-A level until he’s needed once more.
