    Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that he's hopeful Gonzalez will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list around when he's first eligible to be activated, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

    Advice: Gonzalez was joined on the IL on Sunday by fellow infielder Vaughn Grissom, who is recovering from a right hamstring strain. Grissom's injury is believed to be the more significant of the two, as he'll be sent in for an MRI, whereas Gonzalez won't be subject to any further imaging. Assuming the tightness in his left leg subsides in the coming days and he's able to resume baseball activities, Gonzalez could be ready to return from the IL for the Red Sox's three-game series with the Phillies that begins June 11. In the meantime, the Red Sox are likely to lean on Enmanuel Valdez and Jamie Westbrook as the main options at second base, with the former occupying the strong side of a platoon.     Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Yankees.

    Advice: With Marco Luciano (hamstring) landing on the injured list Friday, Schmitt has a chance to make shortstop his own in June. This was Schmitt's second game in a row in the lineup -- he started versus right-hander Cody Poteet on Saturday and stayed in the starting nine versus southpaw Nestor Cortes on Sunday. Through eight games this season, Schmitt has two homers, five RBI and two runs scored over 30 plate appearances. Brett Wisely has also been an option at shortstop lately, and both Schmitt and Wisely offer utility upside if the Giants opt to get creative with their lineup decisions.     Advice: Jones hadn't played for Albuquerque since April 21 due to the unspecified injury, but he picked up right where he left off in his return to action for the Triple-A club. Through 80 plate appearances on the season, Jones is slashing .254/.375/.418 with a pair of home runs and 14 stolen bases.     Berti (calf) is wearing a walking boot and isn't expected to be able to return from the 10-day injured list for 6-to-8 weeks, MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Berti was injured while running out of the batter's box during a game May 24 and was subsequently diagnosed with a high-grade left calf strain. He landed on the IL the following day and received a platelet-rich plasma injection May 28.
