  • Strong showing in rehab start
    Luzardo (elbow) struck out six and allowed one hit and one walk over 5.2 scoreless innings in a rehab start with Single-A Jupiter on Sunday.

    Advice: Luzardo needed just 67 pitches to cruise through his 5.2 frames. Per Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com, Luzardo averaged 95.1 miles per hour and touched 96.4 mph with his four-seam fastball. The Marlins will likely wait a couple days to make sure Luzardo recovers from the rehab start without any issues, but he should be set up to return from the 15-day injured list for this weekend's series versus the Phillies.   • Garners win in return
    Nelson (2-2) picked up the win over the Padres on Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings.

    Advice: Nelson wasn't spectacular in his return from a trip to the injured list, but he didn't need to be after the Diamondbacks plated 11 runs through five innings. Nelson served up a two-run homer to Jackson Merrill in the second before Kyle Higashioka doubled in Ha-Seong Kim after he walked. The Padres would scratch across another run in the third before being silenced the rest of the way. Nelson was able to get up to 99 pitches and has slid into the rotation spot of Tommy Henry who was optioned to Triple-A Reno last week. Nelson owns a 5.23 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB in 20.2 innings and is slated for a tough road matchup against Baltimore his next time out. Rotowire.com Today, 4:56 am
     
  • Surrenders eight runs in loss
    Waldron (1-4) took the loss Sunday against the Diamondbacks, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out two over three innings.

    Advice: Waldron suffered his worst outing of the season, allowing a career-high eight runs while also posting the shortest outing since he debuted last year. The Diamondbacks put up a four-spot in the first, highlighted by a two-run blast from Ketel Marte. They tacked on another two in the second and then chased him out of the fourth with back-to-back doubles to open the inning. Despite the shaky results, Waldron may retain a rotation spot after Joe Musgrove was put on the 15-day injured list Sunday with elbow inflammation. Waldron now owns a 5.82 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB in 34 innings and is expected to take the mound versus the Dodgers over the weekend. Rotowire.com Today, 4:40 am
     
  • Handles Giants for win No. 2
    Walker (2-0) earned the win over the Giants on Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven over 6.1 innings.

    Advice: The Giants got to Walker in the opening frame with a run, but he was able to silence them the rest of the way until Thairo Estrada crushed a two-run blast in the seventh to make it a 5-3 ballgame and end Walker's night. Walker has now carried strong outings into the seventh in back-to-back starts to open up the season but hasn't quite been able to seal the deal. He has a 3.00 ERA through innings 1-6 and a 67.50 ERA in the seventh frame. His spot in the rotation is secure after the Phillies announced Spencer Turnbull would be operating as a bulk relief option moving forward.   • Sustains back injury Sunday
    Boyle, who was lifted after one inning in Sunday's loss to the Marlins, was suffering from lower-back pain that got worse the more he threw during the frame, MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Boyle's performance clearly seemed to be affected by his physical limitations, as he allowed four earned runs on a hit and three walks over his sole inning on the mound. Manager Mark Kotsay confirmed Boyle would undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the injury, at which point the right-hander's chances of making his next scheduled start Saturday against the Mariners will become clearer. Per Sonja Chen of MLB.com, right-handers Osvaldo Bido and Joey Estes, both of whom have big-league experience and are on the 40-man roster, are candidates to be called up from Triple-A Las Vegas should Boyle miss at least one turn through the rotation, although she adds Oakland has long relievers Mitch Spence and Kyle Muller as options on the big-league roster.     Sanchez allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings in a no-decision Sunday. He struck out two during the win over Oakland.

    Advice: Sanchez threw four innings for the second straight outing and would've been in line for the victory if he went one more Sunday. He kept the A's scoreless through three frames before coughing up a pair of runs in the fourth. Sanchez lowered his ERA to 7.50 with a lackluster 11:7 K:BB through 18 frames.     Boyle (2-5) yielded four runs on a hit and three walks over one inning Sunday, striking out one batter and taking a loss against Miami.

    Advice: Boyle narrowly escaped the first frame after coughing up a three-run shot to Nick Gordon. It was the shortest start of the year for Boyle, and he threw just 16 of 35 pitches for strikes. The command has been a constant problem for him this season; Boyle has registered a 29:23 K:BB with a 7.16 ERA through 27.2 innings. As of now, he's in line for a start in Seattle next weekend.   • Taijuan Walker posts quality start in win Sunday
    Taijuan Walker posted a quality start in Sunday night’s victory over the Giants, surrendering three runs on five hits across 6 1/3 strong innings of work.

    Advice: Walker racked up seven strikeouts on the evening while issuing just one free pass. The Giants scratched out a run in the opening inning on an RBI double by Michael Conforto, then Walker shut them down completely until Thairo Estrada connected on a two-run blast in the seventh. The 31-year-old hurler got just six swings and misses on 90 pitches in the ballgame, posting a CSW of 30 percent.   • Ryne Nelson inconsistent in first start off IL
    Ryne Nelson allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings in a win over the Padres on Sunday.

    Advice: It wasn’t a great start for Nelson, who posted a 15 percent whiff rate and 26 percent CSW. He got a lot of called strikes on his four-seam fastball, but the whiffs up in the zone were carrying him before the trip to the IL, and they just weren’t there on Sunday.
