• Back on bench in Donovan's return
Carlson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros.

Advice: Carlson started in right field in each of the Cardinals' three games in Philadelphia over the weekend, going 1-for-9 with a walk. Though the Cardinals have an opening in the outfield while Lars Nootbaar (oblique) is out indefinitely, the team will get Brendan Donovan (neck) back from a three-game absence Monday. Donovan is starting in left field and will be joined in the outfield by Mike Siani and Alec Burleson, who could continue to play ahead of the switch-hitting Carlson against right-handed pitching. • Reinstated from IL
The Giants reinstated Conforto (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list Monday.

Advice: Conforto appeared in two rehab games with Triple-A Sacramento over the weekend, going 1-for-5 with one walk and one strikeout. Conforto was slashing .324/.410/.588 with two home runs and four RBI in May before landing on the injured list due to a right hamstring strain. Conforto is starting in left field Monday and batting in the cleanup spot against Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 3:12 pm
  • Rejoins starting nine
Donovan (neck) will start in left field and bat sixth in Monday's game against the Astros.

Advice: Donovan is back in action Monday after a stiff neck kept him out of the entirety of the Cardinals' three-game series with the Phillies over the weekend. The 27-year-old had been serving as the Cardinals' leadoff man against right-handed pitching prior to suffering the neck injury, but Donovan may have lost that role to Masyn Winn. The second-year shortstop will bat atop the order in the series opener in Houston while Donovan drops to sixth against Astros righty Justin Verlander. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 3:10 pm

  • Giants get Michael Conforto back from injured list
Giants activated OF Michael Corforto from the 10-day injured list.

Advice: Blake Snell went on the IL, allowing the Giants a chance to push back the decision on which hitter to cut to make room for Conforto. Heliot Ramos will be displaced from left field by Conforto’s return, but he figures to remain in the lineup the majority of the time, probably at Luis Matos’s expense. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:08 pm
  • Kris Bryant out due to soreness
Kris Bryant is out of Monday’s lineup because he’s sore after making a catch Sunday.

Advice: So, it’s not some weird anti-lefty thing. Bryant has only been playing the field once per series of late, but even that might be too much at this point. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:59 pm

  • Corbin Carroll dropped to eighth in lineup
The Diamondbacks have Corbin Carroll batting eighth tonight against Giants left-hander Erik Miller.

Advice: Gabriel Moreno is batting second in his place. This might just be a special-occasion switch, since Miller is being looked at as an opener and dropping Carroll means he might not bat until righty Spencer Howard enters the game. The Diamondbacks typically dropped Carroll in the lineup against lefties last year, but that hasn’t been the case this season; he’s hit first or second against both lefties and righties, aside for a 10-game span in late April and early May in which he was dropped to the bottom of the order versus everyone. Arizona faces a lefty again tomorrow, so unless Torey Lovullo comments, we’ll have to wait and see whether this is a one-time thing, a change versus lefties or a semi-permanent move. The slumping Carroll’s batted-ball numbers got better for a time last month, even if his actual statistics didn’t. Unfortunately, though, they’ve faded again lately. • Dealing with sore back
Rockies manager Bud Black said that Bryant isn't in the lineup Monday against the Reds due to a sore back, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Black noted that Bryant is sore after the 32-year-old made a twisting catch in the outfield during Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Dodgers. Bryant is consulting with doctors and trainers and is considered day-to-day for now. With Bryant on the bench Monday, Jacob Stallings will step in as the Rockies' designated hitter. • Kris Bryant absent from lineup versus lefty
Kris Bryant is on the bench versus a lefty for the second time in the Rockies’ last five games Monday.

Advice: Oddly enough, he played in all three games against righties in between the southpaws. We’re not sure if this is some kind of reaction to Bryant starting off 2-for-19 against lefties this season or if maybe something physically is bothering Bryant more when swinging against lefties or if Bud Black has seen him play so infrequently, he simply forgot that Bryant bats right-handed. Bryant has typically been better versus left-handers than right-handers over the course of his career. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:35 pm

  • Not in Monday's lineup
Bryant is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds, Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports.

Advice: Bryant is slashing just .231/.348/.308 in 11 games since returning from a back injury, which is actually an improvement over the .149/.273/.255 line he produced before getting hurt. With Bryant sitting for the series opener, Jacob Stallings will start at designated hitter while Elehuris Montero covers first base for the Rockies. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 1:00 pm
