  • Takes loss in 10th
    Estevez (0-3) took the loss against the Astros on Tuesday after allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk while managing to record one out.

    Advice: Estevez had no room for error after the Angels failed to score in the top of the 10th and was stuck with facing the heart of the Astros lineup. Yordan Alvarez was intentionally walked to start the inning, and then Alex Bregman was retired before giving up the game-winning hit to Jeremy Pena. Estevez has now pitched on back-to-back days and in three of the last four and likely will have the day off Wednesday. He now owns a 5.06 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB in 16 innings.   • Hurt by long ball Tuesday
    Canning did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Astros, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two over five innings.

    Advice: Canning's only runs against him came off back-to-back home runs from Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez in the first inning. He then settled in from there and pitched four scoreless frames before his day was done after 89 pitches. He's now allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last four starts but has also given up four home runs and nine walks over that span. Tuesday was his fourth start of the year with three or fewer strikeouts, and he's now averaging just 6.3 K/9 after a career-best 9.9 K/9 a season ago.   • Ryne Nelson won’t start Wednesday for D-backs
    The Diamondbacks will likely bypass Ryne Nelson and go with an opener in Wednesday’s game against the Dodgers.

    Advice: Nelson was lit up for seven runs by the Tigers last time out, putting his spot in jeopardy, but when everything was quiet over the last few days, it seemed likely that he’d remain in the rotation.   • Aaron Brooks delivers quality start versus Rockies
    Aaron Brooks gave the A’s another quality start by allowing three runs in six innings Tuesday at home against the Rockies.

    Advice: This is definitely pushing the boundaries of the quality start; not only did he do the bare minimum in allowing three runs in six innings, but he was doing so against the road-team version of the Rockies in a strong pitcher’s park in Oakland.   • Cal Quantrill strikes out eight against A’s
    Cal Quantrill yielded two runs in six innings and struck out eight against the A’s on Tuesday.

    Advice: The Rockies ought to be shopping Quantrill now; it’s hard to imagine he’ll have more trade value at the deadline than he does currently with his 3.59 ERA and a 44/21 K/BB ratio in 57 2/3 innings.   • Justin Lawrence takes blown save in seventh inning
    Justin Lawrence took a blown save in the seventh after giving up a two-run homer to Oakland’s Seth Brown on Tuesday.

    Advice: Jalen Beeks’ hold on the closer’s role in Colorado got a little stronger tonight. Lawrence, who has been dealing with an inflated ERA since giving up four earned runs in his second outing of the season, had been pitching well in amassing a 1.08 ERA this month.   • Picks up eighth save
    Jansen collected the save Tuesday, allowing one hit and no walks over a scoreless inning against the Rays. He didn't generate a strikeout.

    Advice: Jansen hadn't pitched since allowing a pair of runs and taking a loss May 16 and was able to shake off the rust after allowing a leadoff double to Isaac Paredes in the ninth, retiring three straight batters to pick up his eighth save of the season.   • Falls short of quality start
    Criswell didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Tampa Bay, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk across 5.1 innings. He struck out six.

    Advice: Both of the runs against Criswell came in the first inning, where he allowed Josh Lowe and Randy Arozarena to reach via hit to start the frame before Isaac Paredes plated them both with a single to left field. Despite not letting a runner reach scoring position after the first, Criswell's day came to an end early in the fifth when manager Alex Cora went to the bullpen in response to Yandy Diaz entering as a pinch hitter. With Garrett Whitlock (oblique) expected to undergo surgery, Criswell can be penciled into Boston's starting rotation for the foreseeable future.
