• Irvin gives up four runs in loss to Diamondbacks
Jake Irvin allowed four earned runs on eight hits over five innings while striking out two in Tuesday’s loss to the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Irvin allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base, but it was the two-run homer by Ketel Marte that put him in a hole early. Irvin would go on to pitch two scoreless innings before surrendering two more runs in the fifth, which would be his final inning. It was just the second time this year that Irvin has allowed four or more runs in an outing, as he’s been one of the core members of a Nationals rotation that has surprised in the first half of the season. Irvin will look to get back on track in his next start, which is scheduled for Sunday against the Rockies. Rotoworld Today, 6:15 pm

  • Yankees transfer Clarke Schmidt to 60-day IL
Yankees transferred RHP Clarke Schmidt to the 60-dau injured list.

Advice: Nothing has changed regarding Schmidt’s return timetable as the procedural move merely opens up a spot on New York’s 40-man roster. The 28-year-old righty has been on the shelf since late May recovering from a right lat strain and is first-eligible to return on July 26. Rotoworld Today, 3:16 pm

  • Moves to 60-day IL
The Yankees transferred Schmidt (lat) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

Advice: The Yankees announced Schmidt would be shut down from throwing for 4-to-6 weeks once they placed him on the IL on May 30, so his move to the 60-day IL hardly comes as a surprise. He will be eligible for activation from the injured list July 26, but a better idea of his return timeline will have to wait until he's been cleared to throw again. Rotowire.com Today, 3:15 pm

  • Gerrit Cole officially starting on Wednesday
According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Gerrit Cole will make his season debut on Wednesday against the Orioles

Advice: It always seemed likely that the Yankees would bring Cole back to face the Orioles, and we now know that will be the case. Cole has looked good during his rehab starts and was up to 70 pitches in his last outing, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him go at least 80 pitches on Wednesday night if the results allow. This also means the end of Cody Poteet in the Yankees’ rotation for now. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:25 pm

  • Set for season debut Wednesday
Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Monday that Cole (elbow) will be activated from the 60-day injured list to make his season debut Wednesday against the Orioles, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.

Advice: Cole has been lights-out on his rehab assignment, yielding one earned run with a 19:0 K:BB over 12.1 innings covering three starts. In his final rehab outing this past Friday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Cole struck out 10 while allowing just one unearned run across 4.1 frames. The right-hander has been out all season after being diagnosed in mid-March with nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow. Cole's workload will likely be curtailed initially after he had a high of 68 pitches on his rehab assignment. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:23 pm

  • Too much traffic in loss
Stroman (6-3) allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over five innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Red Sox.

Advice: In addition to allowing 11 baserunners, Stroman was also on the mound for six of the Red Sox's franchise-best nine steals in the contest. Stroman has had two bad outings and one good one through three starts in June, though Sunday marked his first loss since May 9. The right-hander has maintained a 3.08 ERA despite a 1.30 WHIP and 61:38 K:BB over 84.2 innings through 15 starts this season. He's projected for a home start versus Atlanta in his next outing. • Marcus Stroman gives up four runs in loss Sunday
Marcus Stroman struggled in a losing effort against the Red Sox on Sunday night, giving up four runs on seven hits over his five innings of work.

Advice: The 33-year-old hurler also walked four batters in the ballgame while punching out three. The Red Sox scratched out two runs against him in the second inning on a two-out, two-run single by Ceddanne Rafaela, then tacked on single runs in the third and in the fifth. They also took advantage of Stroman and Jose Trevino on the basepaths, swiping six bases in their five innings. Stroman got seven swings and misses on 102 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of only 24 percent. He’ll look to bounce back as he brings a 3.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 61/38 K/BB ratio (84 2/3 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Braves. Rotoworld Sunday, 7:19 pm

  • Could be back Wednesday
Cole (elbow) could be reinstated from the 60-day injured list to start Wednesday's game versus the Orioles at Yankee Stadium, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The Yankees have confirmed Nestor Cortes and Luis Gil as their starting pitchers for games Tuesday and Thursday versus Baltimore, but a starter has yet to be made for Wednesday while the club weighs whether to activate Cole for his season debut or to have him make another minor-league rehab start. While shifting his assignment from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Cole delivered a gem in his third rehab outing Friday, striking out 10 over 4.1 innings while allowing one unearned run on two hits and no walks. He tossed 70 pitches in the start, so Cole would likely have a slight cap on his workload if he were to rejoin the New York rotation Wednesday. If the Yankees decide to have Cole make one more start in the minors, Cody Poteet would likely get another turn through the big-league rotation. Rotowire.com Sunday, 3:16 pm

  • Gerrit Cole could start Wednesday against Orioles
Gerrit Cole (elbow) could make his season debut Wednesday against the Orioles.

Advice: The Yankees announced their rotation for the series against Baltimore. Kind of. Tuesday’s starter will be Nestor Cortes, and Thursday will be Luis Gil. Wednesday has a TBD by it, and it seems possible — if not probable — that it’ll be Cole returning to the rotation. The 2023 Cy Young winner has looked the part in his rehab starts, and while there could be some precautions taken, there’s every reason to believe he’ll be just as fantasy relevant over these three-plus months of 2024.
