    • Earns fifth win
Rodriguez (5-1) earned the win over the White Sox on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks over five innings while striking out seven.

Advice: Rodriguez ran into trouble out of the gate after surrendering a leadoff single to Tommy Pham to open the game. The right-hander would fail to retire four of the first six batters in the frame and even walked home the first run of the contest, but was able to escape without any further damage being done. His command issues would continue in the third when he issued a two-out walk and then hit Paul DeJong with a pitch in the following at-bat, eventually leading to Chicago's second run coming home on an Andrew Benintendi single. Rodriguez has now allowed just two runs over 11 innings since returning from the injured list, though his five walks Thursday marked a season high. He's now issued at least three free passes in three straight outings. Rotowire.com Today, 4:45 am

    • Rutschman knocks in three Thursday
Adley Rutschman went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI against the White Sox on Thursday.

Advice: Rutschman had an RBI single in the third inning to tie the game and a two-run single in the sixth inning to put the Orioles up 7-2. He’s putting together another nice season with a .299 average and 31 RBI on the year.

    • Rodriguez gets fifth win Thursday
Grayson Rodriguez allowed two runs in five innings and picked up the win in the Orioles’ 8-6 win over the White Sox on Thursday.

Advice: Rodriguez was a bit of a mixed bag in his second start since coming off the injured list. The win was his fifth of the season. Rodriguez struck out seven, but also allowed three hits and walked five. His ERA is 3.20 on the season now. The 24-year-old right-hander is scheduled to face the Red Sox at home next week.

    • Decent outing versus Cubs
Smith-Shawver allowed three hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.1 shutout innings Thursday versus the Cubs, taking a no-decision.

Advice: Smith-Shawver pitched fairly well, aside from needing 87 pitches (55 strikes) to get 13 outs. It's a much better showing than his 6.10 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 35:17 K:BB over 31 innings for Triple-A Gwinnett to begin 2024. The right-hander's call-up could have been merely for a spot start after Atlanta's doubleheader earlier in the week, so it's unclear if the team will make room for him beyond Thursday. Darius Vines, who is taking the mound Friday in Pittsburgh, is the other candidate for the currently vacant No. 5 starter job. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 6:11 pm

    • AJ Smith-Shawver sharp in season debut vs. Cubs
AJ Smith-Shawver fired 4 1/3 scoreless innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Cubs.

Advice: Smith-Shawver looked sharp on Thursday afternoon against the Cubs, carrying a shutout into the fifth inning before Braves manager Brian Snitker elected to turn things over to the bullpen rather than let him face the top of Chicago’s lineup for a third time. He surrendered just three hits, struck out four and issued only a pair of walks. He generated nine swinging strikes and finished with a 24 percent CSW. The 21-year-old righty rocketed to the big leagues last year, but hasn’t had a ton of success at the highest level. There’s a possibility he gets an extended look over the rest of the year, but that remains to be seen. He’s currently in line to take the ball next Wednesday against the Nationals. • Another strong outing
Skenes didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Giants, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out three.

Advice: While Thursday's outing wasn't as dominant as Skene's 11-strikeout performance in his last start, the rookie right-hander was still effective, coaxing a pair of key double-play balls to limit the Giants to just one run. However, the Pirates bullpen would implode late, leaving Skenes with a no-decision in an eventual 7-6 loss. Skenes now sports a 2.25 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and an impressive 21:4 K:BB through his first three starts (16 innings). He's currently in line for a road matchup with the Tigers in his next outing. • Paul Skenes limits Giants to one run over six
Paul Skenes allowed one run over six innings with three strikeouts, but didn’t factor into the decision against the Giants on Thursday.

Advice: Skenes allowed six hits and one walk. The right-hander didn’t have his best swing-and-miss stuff, and he did deal with some traffic; something he didn’t deal with at all in his six no-hit innings Friday against the Cubs. Even still, the 21-year-old was impressive again, and he now has a 2.25 ERA and a 21/4 K/BB over three starts. Next up for Skenes is a start against the Tigers on Wednesday. • Rays activate Shane Baz, option him to Triple-A
Rays activated RHP Shane Baz from the 15-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Durham.

Advice: Baz was strong in his last outing and had gotten up to 76 pitches. However, his command still needs to be refined as he works back from Tommy John surgery. Baz is likely to make a few starts in the minors and, provided they go well, could join the Rays’ rotation at some point in June. Rotoworld Yesterday, 11:12 am

    • Activated, optioned to Triple-A
The Rays reinstated Baz (elbow) from the injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Durham.

Advice: Baz has been on the injured list all season while completing the final stages of recovery from his July 2022 Tommy John surgery. The 24-year-old righty started four games at Triple-A during his rehab assignment, posting a 6.00 ERA and 1.92 WHIP while striking out eight batters and walking 11 through 12 innings. He'll remain with Durham despite being fully recovered, though there is still a possibility he contributes to the Rays' pitching staff later this season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:08 am
