• Victor Caratini homers in loss to Twins
Victor Caratini, starting behind the plate for Houston for the third time in four games, hit his fourth homer Sunday against the Twins.

Advice: He nearly had a second; his 401-foot fly to right-center in the seventh would have been a homer in 20 ballparks, according to Statcast. We still like Yainer Díaz, but Caratini is certainly one of the game’s top-30 catchers and really should have landed a starting job as a free agent over the winter. He’ll probably continue to cut into Díaz’s playing time in at least the short-term, making Díaz expendable in one-catcher shallow leagues. Rotoworld Yesterday, 1:21 pm
  • Red Sox place Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) on IL
Red Sox placed INF Romy Gonzalez on the 15-day injured list with a hamstrings train.

Advice: Gonzalez will sit out the next week-plus while recovering. The Red Sox selected the contract of Jamie Westbrook from Triple-A Worcester to take Gonzalez’s place on the roster. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:23 am

  • Lands on IL with hamstring strain
The Red Sox placed Gonzalez on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left hamstring strain.

Advice: Gonzalez was one of two Boston infielders to hit the shelf Sunday with a hamstring injury, as Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) was also deactivated. The lefty-hitting Enmanuel Valdez is expected to occupy the strong side of a platoon at second base while Grissom is on the IL, but Gonzalez might have been the preferred option at the keystone against left-handed pitching had he not strained his hamstring. Jamie Westbrook -- whose contract was selected from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday -- now profiles as a likely platoon mate for Valdez at second base. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:21 am

  • Huge day against Detroit
Valdez went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Tigers.

Advice: Getting the start at DH and batting fifth, Valdez tormented Matt Olson and took him deep in the second and sixth innings, adding a two-bagger in between for good measure. It was the 25-year-old infielder's first start since being called back up from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, but with Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) headed back to the IL after leaving Saturday's game early, the path is clear for Valdez to see regular action at second base for at least the next couple weeks, perhaps on the strong side of a platoon with Romy Gonzalez. Valdez is batting just .179 (17-for-95) in the majors this year, but he's having a breakout season in the power department, slugging four homers in 31 games for Boston and adding six in 20 games for Worcester. • Casey Schmitt goes 2-for-4, homers in loss
Casey Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer on Saturday in the Giants’ loss to the Yankees.

Advice: Schmitt slashed San Francisco’s early deficit in half by taking Yankees starter Cody Poteet deep to left-center field in the third inning. It was his first round-tripper of the season. He was the lone Giants’ batter to reach base more than once during Saturday’s one-sided affair at Oracle Park as Yankees starter Cody Poteet and a quartet of relievers limited them to just five hits combined. • Hits homer in loss
Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 7-3 loss to the Yankees.

Advice: Schmitt got the Giants on the board in the third inning in his first game since his recall Friday and his seventh contest at the big-league level season. He's gone 5-for-26 (.192) with two extra-base hits and three RBI. Schmitt will be an option at shortstop primarily, but he also has experience at second and third, so he may settle into a utility role while in the majors. Rotowire.com Saturday, 10:45 pm

  • Rehab assignment imminent
Winn (forearm) will start a rehab assignment Tuesday at Triple-A Sacramento, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Advice: Giants manager Bob Melvin hinted earlier this week that Winn could've been activated from the IL and rejoined the big-league rotation as soon as Monday or Tuesday. However, we now know Winn will need a rehab stint before being reinstated. Considering Winn threw 45 pitches in a bullpen May 27, it's likely he'll need only one or two minor-league appearances before getting the green light. Rotowire.com Saturday, 4:10 pm

  • Enmanuel Valdez slugs two homers in victory
Enmanuel Valdez went 3-for-4 with two homers, a double, three runs scored, and three RBI to lead the Red Sox to a 6-3 win over the Tigers on Saturday.

Advice: Valdez had an outstanding day at the plate on Saturday. He led off the second inning with a solo homer off Reese Olson to put the Red Sox on the board. A double to lead off the fourth put him in position to score once again on a sacrifice fly. Valdez got to Olson once again in the sixth with a two-run blast for his first career multi-homer game. The 25-year-old second baseman was recently recalled from Triple-A for some depth after Tyler O’Neill landed on the injured list, but isn’t likely to get regular playing time to make him relevant in most leagues. He’s slashing .179/.206/.358 with four homers and 14 RBI across 103 plate appearances. Rotoworld Saturday, 3:41 pm
  • Recalled by San Francisco
The Giants recalled Schmitt from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday.

Advice: The move corresponds with Marco Luciano being placed on the injured list due to a right hamstring strain. Since being optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on May 17, Schmitt has gone 14-for-44 with 12 runs, four home runs and 12 RBI. With both Luciano and Nick Ahmed (wrist) on the IL, Schmitt will likely form a platoon at shortstop with the lefty-hitting Brett Wisely. Rotowire.com Friday, 3:41 pm
