    • Luis Gil twirls six shutout in win over Rays
Luis Gil threw six shutout innings in a win over the Rays on Sunday, allowing three hits while striking out three.

Advice: Gil also walked two on the day and showed solid enough command, pounding the zone with his four-seam fastball over 60 percent of the time. The changeup was the only pitch that wasn’t consistently landing in the zone, but he got plenty of swings and misses with a 29 percent whiff rate on it. It wasn’t a dominant effort with a 23 percent CSW, but he didn’t allow much hard contact. His season ERA is now down to 2.51, and he has a great start against the White Sox next weekend and should be started in all league types. Rotoworld 21 minutes ago

    • Scoreless frame in return from IL
Fairbanks struck out one in a perfect inning Saturday versus the Yankees in his first appearance since returning from the injured list.

Advice: Fairbanks was activated from the IL earlier in the day following a nearly three-week absence with a nerve issue. Rays manager Kevin Cash put him right to work, asking him to preserve a five-run lead in the ninth. Fairbanks did so without a sweat, needing just 11 pitches to complete the 1-2-3 frame. The 30-year-old now sits on a 7.88 ERA and 11:8 K:BB over eight innings this season. Despite the ugly numbers, Fairbanks should still be the clear favorite for saves in Tampa Bay's bullpen, as long as he's healthy. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 5:56 pm
    • Pete Fairbanks works scoreless frame in return
Pete Fairbanks looked sharp in his return from the injured list on Saturday, retiring all three hitters that he faced against the Yankees.

Advice: It wasn’t a save situation, but Fairbanks was given the ball with the Rays leading 7-2 heading into the ninth inning. He came on and got Anthony Rizzo to line out to first base, Gleyber Torres on a called third strike and Jose Trevino on a ground ball to short to end it — needing just 11 pitches (seven strikes) to get the job done. It looks like he’ll jump right back into the closer’s role for the Rays. Rotoworld Yesterday, 4:27 pm
    • Rays activate closer Pete Fairbanks on Saturday
Rays activated RHP Pete Fairbanks from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: Fairbanks makes his return to Tampa Bay’s closer role following a three-week absence due to a nerve-related condition in his right hand. The 30-year-old stopper struggled in eight appearances to open the year, but looked sharp earlier this week in a pair of minor league rehab appearances for Triple-A Durham. He should take over the closing duties for the Rays with relief ace Jason Adam continuing to vulture the occasional save chance. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:56 am
    • Reinstated from IL
The Rays reinstated Fairbanks (arm) from the 15-day injured list Saturday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Advice: Fairbanks played in two games with Triple-A Durham on his rehab assignment, and he threw one scoreless inning with a strikeout in his last outing Thursday. The right-hander joined the Rays on Friday, and he will be available for the weekend series against the Yankees. Before landing on the IL on April 22 with a nerve issue in his throwing arm, Fairbanks logged three saves in eight outings with a 9.00 ERA, 2.29 WHIP and 10:8 K:BB over seven frames. • Escapes with fifth save
Jax gave up a run on two hits and a walk in the ninth inning Friday while striking out one, recording his fifth save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Blue Jays.

Advice: Jhoan Duran got the call in the eighth inning to face the top of Toronto's order, leaving the ninth for Jax, but Jax ran into trouble with two outs after a Bo Bichette single kicked off a Jays rally. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli has been using Duran as a relief ace rather than a pure closer and Duran has three saves and three holds in six appearances since coming off the IL in late April, but Jax hasn't been the sole beneficiary of the available opportunities -- Caleb Thielbar and Cole Sands have also picked up saves since Duran's season debut. Brock Stewart (shoulder) could also end up in that mix once he gets healthy. Jax has a 3.06 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB through 17.2 innings on the season, and while Duran should see the majority of the save chances for the Twins, his main understudy could creep into the low double digits in saves by the time the season is done. • Blanks Tampa for fourth win
Schmidt (4-1) earned the win Friday over the Rays, allowing five hits and two walks over 6.2 scoreless innings. He struck out six.

Advice: It's the first quality start of the season for Schmidt, as he hadn't pitched more than 5.2 innings prior to Friday, but he's won three of his last four outings. The 28-year-old lowered his ERA to 2.95 with a 1.27 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB across eight starts (42.2 innings) this season. He's currently slated for a road matchup with the Twins in his next start. • Quality start in Coors return
Gray did not factor into the decision Friday against the Rockies, allowing one run on eight hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out seven.

Advice: Gray collected a quality start in his return to Coors Field after departing Colorado in free agency following the 2021 season. The Texas right-hander racked up his third consecutive QS, firing a 1.71 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 17:1 K:BB in 21 innings over that span. Gray is slated to make his next start at home against Cleveland. • Jon Gray whiffs seven, allows one run vs. Rockies
Jon Gray struck out seven while allowing just a run over six innings Friday in a no-decision versus the Rockies.

Advice: Gray, 32, did allow eight hits, but he issued just one walk and was able to make enough big pitchers to hold the Colorado lineup to just that run in Coors Field. The right-hander has been excellent as of late, and he’s now allowed no more than one run in all but two starts in 2024. He’ll take a 2.36 ERA into his next scheduled start against Cleveland on Wednesday. Rotoworld Friday, 8:05 pm
