      Verdugo went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 7-3 win over the Mariners.

      Advice: All of the Yankees' runs came via the long ball Wednesday, and Verdugo's eighth-inning blast cut off the Mariners' hopes of a comeback. The veteran outfielder has gone 11-for-37 (.297) over his last nine contests, picking up at least one hit in eight of them while adding nine RBI and five doubles. He's slashing .254/.325/.422 with six homers, 26 RBI, 23 runs scored and a stolen base over 197 plate appearances this season. Verdugo won't get the accolades of fellow outfielders Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, but he's been a strong and steady presence as the Yankees' starting left fielder this season.     • Allows five runs in loss
      Steele (0-2) took the loss against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five over 6.1 innings.

      Advice: Steele made short work of the first six batters he faced in the contest before giving up a leadoff single to Michael Harris to open the third, followed by a two-run shot off the bat of Adam Duvall. The lefty then appeared to settle in over the next three frames, but again found himself in trouble after allowing three of the first four batters to reach in the seventh. He would end up being charged with another three runs in the inning, with two coming home after he was relieved by Jose Cuas. Steele has now given up four or more runs in three consecutive starts and is still looking for his first win of the season.       Fried (4-2) earned the win over the Cubs on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in a complete game. He struck out nine.

      Advice: Fried dominated the Cubs' lineup in his second complete game of the season, retiring the first 15 batters he faced before surrendering a leadoff double to Ian Happ to open the bottom of the sixth. The lefty produced 18 whiffs in the contest and finished with a season-high nine strikeouts, while also not issuing any walks for first time in his last five starts.     • Max Fried tosses complete game in win over Cubs
      Max Fried tossed a complete game, allowing two runs -- one earned -- with nine strikeouts in a win over the Cubs on Wednesday.

      Advice: Fried was outstanding on Wednesday against the Cubs. He had a perfect game going through five innings until Ian Happ led off the sixth with a double. A wild pitch put Happ on third before a groundout brought him in to score. Fried returned for a clean seventh inning before giving up one more unearned run on two hits and an error in the eighth. Fried finished out the complete game with a strikeout in the ninth. The 30-year-old left-hander struck out nine batters overall on 18 whiffs.     • Justin Steele surrenders five runs to Braves in loss
      Justin Steele allowed five runs with five strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in a loss to the Braves on Wednesday.

      Advice: Steele had retired the first six batters before Michael Harris II led off the third inning with a base hit. Adam Duvall followed with a two-run homer to put the Braves on the board. Steele pitched into the seventh, leaving at 93 pitches with a run in, two runners on, and one out. Both inherited runners would come in to score. He struck out five on the day.     • Decision on surgery coming next week
      Whitlock is scheduled to visit Dr. Jeff Dugas in Birmingham, Ala. on May 30, at which point a decision will be made whether he'll require surgery to address his right elbow sprain, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Whitlock was originally placed on the 15-day injured list April 17 with a left oblique strain, but the health of his pitching elbow is now the Red Sox's chief concern after he sustained the injury in his lone rehab start for Triple-A Worcester last Wednesday. He's reportedly dealing with damage to his UCL, so while the early expectation is that he'll need some kind of procedure to address the injury, he'll first consult with Dr. Dugas to see if rest and rehab is a viable treatment plan. Even if Whitlock is able to avoid surgery, he's still likely looking at an extended absence and likely won't be ready to rejoin the Red Sox until the second half of the season even in a best-case scenario.
