    Advice: Derek Hill was called up from Triple-A Round Rock prior to Wednesday's game and will be put to work right away, stepping in as the Rangers' starter in center field for the resting Taveras. After falling into an extended slump at the plate through the first half of June, Taveras seems to have righted the ship of late with six hits -- including a home run -- and two stolen bases in 21 at-bats over his last seven games.   • Could play rehab games this weekend
    Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Wednesday that Nootbaar (oblique) could begin a rehab assignment as soon as this weekend, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

    Advice: Nootbaar hit in the batting cage Monday and then took on-field batting practice Tuesday for the first time since suffering a strained left oblique in late May. It's not clear how many rehab games he might require, but a return in early July is looking doable. Rotowire.com 18 minutes ago

  • Sprains ankle
    Edman (wrist) sprained his ankle while fielding grounders Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

    Advice: It's not viewed as a major setback, but it's not ideal after Edman had finally been making some real progress with his surgically repaired right wrist.   • Rangers select Derek Hill’s contract from Triple-A
    Rangers selected the contract of OF Derek Hill from Triple-A Round Rock.

    Advice: Hill’s first stint with the Rangers ended prematurely earlier this month because the team wanted to add an infielder due to Corey Seager being banged up. He’ll get another look as a reserve outfielder now. The former first-round pick was hitting .350/.415/.631 with eight homers and seven steals in 42 games for Round Rock.     Rangers optioned INF/OF Ezequiel Duran to Triple-A Round Rock.

    Advice: We thought this might happen when Josh Jung came off the IL, but the Rangers declined to wait that long. Duran was hitting .256/.294/.324 in 187 plate appearances this season, and with Josh Smith thriving, he wasn’t going to play much following Jung’s return. A stint in Triple-A shouldn’t hurt.     Rangers activated INF Justin Foscue from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Round Rock.
