    Advice: The 27-year-old outfielder crushed a Erick Fedde changeup over the right-field fence in the second inning for his eighth long ball of the season. Varsho is batting just .182 (10-for-55) in May, but half his hits have gone for extra bases (three doubles, two homers) and he's stayed productive with two steals, nine runs and nine RBI in 14 games.   • Report: Ji-Hwan Bae to be called up Tuesday
    Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports that the Pirates are recalling Ji-Hwan Bae from Triple-A Indianapolis.

    Advice: Bae played well after being activated off the injured list and heading to Indianapolis with a .376 average and seven stolen bases to show for it. The 24-year-old can play all over the field and offers the ability to swipe bags with his speed, but isn’t likely to be a significant fantasy contributor in any other category.     Bae will be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis prior to the Pirates' game against the Giants on Tuesday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

    Advice: There's no word yet on what the corresponding roster move will be. Bae has slashed .367/.479/.551 with four home runs and seven stolen bases over 27 games with Indianapolis this season.   • Lane Thomas starting rehab assignment in Double-A
    Lane Thomas (knee) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Harrisburg.

    Advice: Thomas has been on the injured list since near the end of April due to a sprained left MCL. The outfielder will likely need a week or so of rehab appearances, but then could return to the Washington lineup near the end of May.     Advice: Thomas had been on the verge of returning earlier this month but felt something in his injured left hamstring after a rehab game at Triple-A Reno on May 5. He has since received a platelet-rich plasma injection and begun ramping up again -- running in a pool and taking live at-bats. Thomas made 13 plate appearances over three games during his first rehab assignment, which may be a barometer for how much time the outfielder needs on a second rehab stint.     Advice: McCarthy has two homers over 16 games in May, but he's collected just five hits over his last eight contests. Hernandez has started five straight games at third base since Max Muncy (oblique) exited the lineup, so it appears Hernandez has a path to steady playing time for now.     Dubon went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and two additional runs scored in Monday's 9-7 loss to the Angels.

    Advice: Dubon's hits continue to come in bunches. He's logged three or more hits in three of his last 10 games, but he has just one other hit in that span. The homer was his second of the year and briefly put the Astros ahead 6-1 in the fourth inning before the Angels' comeback rally in the fifth. Dubon is slashing .301/.321/.427 with 19 RBI, 13 runs scored, one stolen base and seven doubles across 37 contests this season. His splits are not too far apart this season, but the Astros are soon to be at full health among their hitters, so there's unlikely to be consistent playing time for the right-handed Dubon against same-handed pitching.
