The third baseman upped his power in late May and is now at 17 homers this season, with eight of them coming since May 17.       Corbin Carroll went 3-for-5 with a double, a steal and two runs scored as the Diamondbacks edged the Padres 4-3 on Thursday.

      Advice: It’s just Carroll’s second three-hit game of the year. All three of Carroll’s hits were legit, leaving his bat on a line at 108, 106 and 99 mph. It’s definitely his most encouraging game in weeks and maybe of the entire season. At .201, he finished the game over the Mendoza Line for the first time since May 12. The outfielder is slashing .201/.284/.291 with two home runs, 10 thefts, 20 RBI, 30 runs scored, seven doubles and four triples over 61 games in a disappointing second full campaign.       Oneil Cruz went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and also stole a base on Thursday in the Pirates’ loss to the Dodgers.

      Advice: Cruz started his professional career with Los Angeles before being traded to the Pirates back in 2017 and came back to haunt his former club in this one with a three-run homer off Dodgers closer Evan Phillips in the eighth inning.       Advice: Rutschman was responsible for the Orioles' first three runs Thursday, launching a solo shot off Yusei Kikuchi in the sixth inning before adding a two-run homer off Zach Pop in the eighth. Rutschman came into the day with just one home run in his previous 17 contests, though he's now hit safely in 10 straight games, going 15-for-42 (.357) in that span.
