    • Orioles GM Dan Duquette said Thursday that Chris Davis may be activated if the club advances to the ALCS.
Advice: Davis was suspended September 12 for amphetamines and has to sit out of the Orioles' first eight playoff games, so the decision will probably come down to how long the ALDS goes. Davis struggled during the regular season, batting .196 with a .704 OPS. But he still managed to slug 26 homers in 127 games and could be a weapon for the O's if they make a deep October run.

    • Chris Davis is slated to play third base again Tuesday in an instructional league game in Florida.
Advice: He's slated to play five innings. Davis got four plate appearances on Monday. He won't be eligible to play in the O's first eight playoff games as he finishes out his suspension for amphetamines, but he's staying sharp just in case they make it far into the postseason.

    • Chris Davis played three innings at third base and got three plate appearances in an instructional league game Friday.
Advice: He had a walk, a flyout and an infield single in his three trips to the dish. The Orioles sent the suspended slugger to instructs in order to stay sharp in the event that he's eventually added to their postseason roster. Davis is ineligible to play in the team's first eight playoff games.

    • C.J. Cron will serve as the Angels' designated hitter for Thursday's Game 1 of the ALDS against the Royals.
Advice: With left-hander Jason Vargas on the hill for the Royals, Angels manager Mike Scioscia will counter with a largely right-handed lineup. It doesn't hurt that Cron homered twice in three at-bats against Vargas this season.

    • Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Pedro Alvarez (foot) could soon begin baseball activities.
Advice: Hurdle's statement suggests Alvarez' meeting with a doctor Tuesday to receive clearance for the foot went well. Still, Hurdle didn't specify how soon or what Alvarez would be cleared to do, and he said he still hadn't talked with Alvarez or the team's training staff about a plan of action. A return still appears to be a ways away at this point.

    • Pedro Alvarez (foot) will be examined on Tuesday to determine if/when he can resume baseball activities.
Advice: Alvarez has been nursing a stress reaction in the fourth metatarsal in his left foot since late August. It's an injury that normally requires 4-6 weeks to recover from, but he isn't giving up hope of returning at some point during the postseason.
