Player Notes

  • Sean Manaea strong against Angels
Sean Manaea held the Angels to one run and four hits over seven innings in a no-decision Monday.

Advice: It's the first run he's allowed in three starts this month. Not a lot has gone right for the A's this year, but it's great that Manaea has stayed healthy. If that continues, he should be a top-of-the-rotation guy next year. Yesterday, 11:56 pm
  • Carlos Gomez goes 3-for-4 against Brewers
Carlos Gomez went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base Monday against the Brewers.

Advice: The Astros could have used this Gomez, but it just wasn't happening. He has more homers (six) in 102 at-bats for Texas than he did in 295 at-bats for Houston (five). He's also hitting .275 with 12 walks, giving him a .357 OBP. His OBP in Houston was .272. Yesterday, 9:14 pm
  • Tim Adleman holds Cardinals in check
Tim Adleman limited the Cardinals to two runs over seven innings in a 15-2 victory Monday.

Advice: The Reds' offense provided the right-hander with plenty of breathing room, but the Cards never really threatened Adleman much in this one. He gave up just four hits on the night and didn't walk anyone, recording four strikeouts along the way. The 28-year-old has managed a respectable 3.90 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 12 starts for the Reds and his last outing will come this weekend against the Cubs. Yesterday, 9:12 pm
  • Steve Selsky has five-hit night versus Cards
Steve Selsky went 5-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Monday's win over the Cardinals.

Advice: Selsky had never tallied multiple hits in a game in his brief big league career before this one. He was part of a 22-hit, 15-run attack by the Reds, as Cincinnati ambushed Jaime Garcia and the Cardinals' bullpen. It's safe to say Selsky probably has earned a spot in Tuesday's lineup. Yesterday, 9:09 pm
  • James Shields picks up win over Rays
James Shields held the Rays to one run in six innings Monday to improve to 6-18 on the season.

Advice: It won't be a 20-loss season for Shields, thanks in part to the Rays starting four-ninths of a major league lineup tonight. Seriously. Catcher Curt Casali, who has hit .147 in 143 at-bats against right-handers this season, was the designated hitter. The designated hitter! Yesterday, 9:05 pm
