• Clears waivers
Rodriguez cleared waivers Wednesday and was sent outright to Triple-A Worcester, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Advice: Rodriguez was designated for assignment Sunday after posting a 6.55 ERA and 1.55 WHIP across 11 innings with the Red Sox. The 32-year-old southpaw will now officially remain with the organization, but he will not have the benefit of a 40-man roster spot and will likely need to show significant improvement in the minors before getting another shot in Boston. • Patrick Sandoval spins 10-strikeout gem in loss
Patrick Sandoval recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts and surrendered two runs over five innings on Wednesday in a loss to the Phillies.

Advice: Sandoval has always shown flashes of potential, but has never really put it all together for Los Angeles, and fantasy managers, over the last few years. He generated just 10 swinging strikes in this outing, but was able to consistently fill up the zone, throwing 63 of 102 pitches for strikes over five frames. A two-run single by Kyle Schwarber in the second inning accounted for all of the damage against him in this one. It was his first double-digit strikeout performance since July 9, 2022. The 27-year-old southpaw will bring an inflated 5.91 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 38/16 K/BB ratio across 32 innings (seven starts) into a road tilt on Tuesday against the Pirates. • Designated for assignment
The Red Sox designated Gutierrez for assignment Wednesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Advice: Gutierrez will lose his spot on the 40-man roster to create space for Dominic Smith, who signed a major-league deal with the Red Sox on Wednesday. The 28-year-old righty owns a 9.28 ERA and 2.16 WHIP across 10.2 innings in Triple-A this season, and he will likely pass through waivers unclaimed. Rotowire.com Today, 4:02 pm
  • Moved up in rotation
Cecconi will start Friday against the Padres instead of Saturday as previously scheduled, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Advice: The 24-year-old right-hander will take the mound a day earlier than expected with Zac Gallen still recovering from his hamstring injury. Cecconi has posted a 2.25 ERA, 0.50 WHIP and 11:1 K:BB over 12 innings in his two-game stint in the major-league rotation. Rotowire.com Today, 3:50 pm
  • Red Sox outright Joely Rodriguez to Triple-A
Red Sox sent LHP Joely Rodriguez outright to Triple-A Worcester.

Advice: Rodriguez slipped through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as bullpen depth for the Red Sox in the upper minors. He’ll get another chance at some point during the 2024 season. Rotoworld Today, 3:49 pm
  • BoSox designate Vladimir Gutierrez for assignment
Red Sox designated RHP Vladimir Gutierrez for assignment.

Advice: The Res Sox needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for Dominic Smith on Wednesday and unfortunately Gutierrez was the odd-man out. He could once again attract interest on waivers. Rotoworld Today, 3:38 pm
  • Ross Stripling spins six shutout frames vs. Pirates
Ross Stripling fired six shutout innings on Wednesday in a win over the Pirates.

Advice: Stripling certainly wasn’t overpowering, mustering only a pair of strikeouts, but he managed to keep Pittsburgh’s lineup off balance with his five-pitch mix. He also consistently filled up the zone, throwing 58 of 79 pitches for strikes, and didn’t hand out a free pass in one of his better outings of the year. He’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in four consecutive starts since April 15, but the lack of strikeouts limits his streaming appeal almost exclusively to deeper mixed leagues. He’ll take a serviceable 4.24 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 27/8 K/BB ratio across 40 1/3 innings (seven starts) into a challenging home matchup on Tuesday against the Rangers. Rotoworld Today, 3:07 pm

  • Shohei Ohtani gets breather on Wednesday
Shohei Ohtani is not in the Dodgers’ starting lineup for Wednesday evening’s showdown against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: It’s a rare and well-deserved day off for the superstar slugger. Will Smith will function as the Dodgers designated hitter on Wednesday while Austin Barnes does the catching against Jordan Montgomery and the D’Backs. Rotoworld Today, 2:53 pm

  • Receiving first day off
Ohtani is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Advice: It hasn't been reported that Ohtani is dealing with any type of injury, so he's presumably just receiving his first rest day of the season. Ohtani still has a 1.017 OPS on the campaign but has gone 5-for-26 over the past six games, and Thursday's team off day will provide a chance for two straight days to reset. Will Smith will rest his legs as the designated hitter while Austin Barnes starts behind the plate. Rotowire.com Today, 2:53 pm
