  • Suffers setback
    Almonte suffered a setback in his ramp-up from a strained right shoulder, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Almonte and the Cubs have been forced to "press pause" on his recovery, according to manager Craig Counsell.   • Could throw off mound soon
    Sanchez (shoulder) has joined the Marlins in Kansas City and could be cleared to throw a bullpen session in a few days, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Sanchez began throwing on flat ground a week ago and might be ready to try things from the bump soon. The right-hander has been out for most of June with shoulder inflammation and will probably require a rehab assignment before being activated.   • Red Sox promote Isaiah Campbell from Triple-A
    Red Sox recalled RHP Isaiah Campbell from Triple-A Worcester.

    Advice: The Red Sox used eight relievers in Sunday’s game, so they needed a shakeup before the start of the Blue Jays series. Campbell was an important addition for the Red Sox in the offseason, but he struggled to start the season before landing on the IL. Since coming back, he has been solid in Triple-A, posting a 2.19 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 18/3 K/BB ratio in 12 1/3 innings.     Assad (4-3) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while failing to record a strikeout over 4.1 innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Mets.

    Advice: Assad has failed to complete five innings in four of his last nine starts. The Mets did most of their damage in the third inning, as Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo hit back-to-back home runs to account for three of the four runs on Assad's line. The right-hander is now at a 3.04 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 79:33 K:BB through 83 innings across 16 starts this year. He's projected for a road game in Milwaukee in his next start.   • Javier Assad gives up four runs in loss to Mets
    Javier Assad wasn’t at his best in Sunday’s loss to the Mets, surrendering four runs on seven hits across his 4 1/3 innings of work.

    Advice: Assad walked one batter on the evening and did not record a single strikeout. Most of the damage done against him came via the long ball, as Francisco Lindor crushed a two-run homer in the third inning and Brandon Nimmo followed with a solo shot. The Mets also scratched out a run while chasing Assad in the fifth. Assad got just three swings and misses on 90 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 26 percent.   • Moving back into rotation
    Turnbull is scheduled to join the rotation and start Wednesday against the Tigers in Detroit, Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

    Advice: He'll be taking over the rotation spot that previously belonged to Taijuan Walker, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with right index finger inflammation after developing what manager Rob Thomson termed as a "hot spot" on his pitching hand. Though an injury of this sort wouldn't seem to portend a lengthy absence for Walker, Turnbull could end up sticking around as the Phillies' No. 5 starter once Walker is healthy, so long as Turnbull comes close to recapturing the excellent form he displayed as a member of the rotation earlier this season. The Phillies have stated that they plan to monitor Turnbull's workload this season after he missed all of 2022 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and a large portion of 2023 due to neck discomfort, but the 31-year-old right-hander has made it difficult for the club to stick to that plan while he's performed so-so as a reliever (4.26 ERA, 14.1 K-BB% in 10 appearances) but exceptionally in his six starts (1.67 ERA, 20.5 K-BB%). His upcoming start against his former Tigers club will be his first since April 30, but Turnbull worked three scoreless innings (49 pitches) in his most recent relief outing Friday and is being targeted for around 70 pitches Wednesday, per Thomson.   • Phillies call up Michael Mercado on Sunday
    Phillies recalled RHP Michael Mercado from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

    Advice: Mercado receives his first promotion to the majors with veteran Taijuan Walker landing on the injured list ahead of Sunday’s contest against the Diamondbacks. A 25-year-old right-hander, Mercado has started in 10 of his 14 appearances for Lehigh Valley this season, compiling a 1.71 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 44:23 K:BB over 47.1 innings. Mercado will be utilized out of the Philadelphia bullpen for now, with Spencer Turnbull lined up to start Wednesday against the Tigers as a replacement in the rotation for Walker, per Paul Casella of MLB.com.
