• Begins rehab assignment
Martin (elbow) began a rehab assignment with the White Sox's rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate on Friday, allowing one run with a 5:1 K:BB over two innings.

Advice: Martin had Tommy John surgery last May and is currently on Triple-A Charlotte's 60-day injured list. He will eventually move up to Charlotte once the White Sox decide he's fully stretched back out and ready to assume a spot in the Triple-A rotation. Martin possesses a spot on the 40-man roster and could be an option to join the major-league club at some point after the All-Star break. Rotowire.com Today, 8:09 am

  • Stuck with another loss
Puk (0-8) took the loss Monday as the Marlins fell to the Cardinals in 12 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits in an inning of relief.

Advice: With the score tied 5-5, Puk got the call in the top of the 12th and served up what proved to be a game-winning two-run homer to Masyn Winn. The southpaw has pitched better since shifting back to the bullpen, and over his last 10 appearances he's posted a 3.48 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 7:1 K:BB through 10.1 innings, but he has only one hold -- and three losses -- during that stretch. • Ready for rehab assignment
Faedo (hip) is scheduled to join Triple-A Toledo this week to begin a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Faedo has been on the injured list for just under two weeks with right hip inflammation, so he'll likely need just one or two rehab appearances before he's cleared to rejoin the Detroit bullpen. After being deployed mostly in middle relief or long relief earlier in the season, Faedo had moved his way into higher-leverage spots prior to landing on the IL. In his last 11 appearances before being deactivated, Faedo notched one win and six holds. Rotowire.com Today, 7:34 am

  • Sent back to minors
The Twins optioned Varland to Triple-A St. Paul on Monday.

Advice: Varland served as the Twins' 27th man during Sunday's doubleheader against the Athletics, giving up two runs in 4.1 frames out of the bullpen in the second game. The righty will slide back into the rotation at St. Paul. Rotowire.com Today, 6:24 am

  • Returned to Triple-A
The Athletics optioned Basso to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday.

Advice: Basso was up with Oakland as the 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader versus the Twins, allowing two runs in two innings in the first game. The lefty will rejoin Las Vegas' rotation. Rotowire.com Today, 6:22 am

  • Drops second straight start
Rodriguez (0-2) took the loss against the Angels on Monday, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 4.2 innings.

Advice: Rodriguez's second big-league outing went about as poorly as his first -- he gave up two fewer hits but twice as many earned runs while failing to complete five frames. The right-hander did make it through two innings unscathed, but he was stung by a three-run third before serving up a two-run homer in the fourth. Rodriguez has given up six earned runs across 8.1 frames over his two starts, and he could be pushed back to the minors if Jakob Junis (shoulder) returns to the big club this week, as expected. • Earns win in team debut
Plesac (1-0) earned the win in Monday's 5-3 victory over Milwaukee, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one batter over six innings.

Advice: Plesac was called upon for an emergency start after projected starter Jose Soriano was unable to pitch due to an abdominal issue. Plesac did quite well considering the circumstances, squeaking by with a quality start and a victory in his first game as an Angel. He gave up two home runs and notched just one punchout, with the latter number serving as a reminder of one of Plesac's biggest flaws -- he's never never posted higher than a 6.8 K/9 in a full big-league season. If Soriano misses additional time, Plesac could get at least one more turn in the rotation, though he isn't likely to be a popular waiver-wire target in fantasy circles. • Racks up three hits from atop order
Ohtani went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk Monday in a 9-5 victory versus the Rockies.

Advice: With Mookie Betts (hand) set to miss several weeks, Ohtani could see most of his work out of the leadoff spot -- he's now slotted in there for both games that Betts has missed so far this season. Ohtani certainly possesses qualities of a leadoff man with a .314 average, .388 OBP and 16 thefts on the campaign, though his power far exceeds what is usually expected from a batter in that role. Ohtani could lose some RBI opportunities with Betts not hitting ahead of him for the foreseeable future, but the Japanese superstar is more than capable of knocking himself in and should continue to get opportunities to score with Will Smith and Freddie Freeman batting behind him. • Defeated by Dodgers on Monday
Quantrill (6-5) took the loss against the Dodgers on Monday, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three batters over five innings.

Advice: Quantrill came into the contest having tossed back-to-back scoreless starts, but he wasn't able to maintain that level of sharpness Monday. The right-hander fell behind 3-0 through two frames, and though he held Los Angeles scoreless for the remainder of his outing, he didn't get the run support necessary to be taken off the hook for the loss. Quantrill has had a few poor appearances this season but has generally been a positive addition to the Rockies' rotation, recording a 3.43 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 59:33 K:BB through 84 innings.
