• Making rehab start
Smyly (hip) will make a rehab start Tuesday with High-A South Bend, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Smyly is set for his first rehab appearance since suffering a pinched nerve in his right hip back in April. It's unclear how long of a rehab stint is required, but Smyly should be on pace to return in late May or early June. Rotowire.com Today, 2:00 pm

  • Taking seat
Sabol is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Pirates.

Advice: Sabol will dodge left-handed pitcher Martin Perez on Tuesday as Curt Casali fills in behind the dish and bats ninth. Rotowire.com Today, 1:56 pm

  • Getting another start
Manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday that Manning will start Friday's game against the Blue Jays, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Advice: Manning was expected to be replaced by Kenta Maeda (illness) in the Tigers' rotation after Maeda threw three innings in a rehab start Sunday. However, Detroit will give Manning another turn in the rotation despite having allowed three or more runs in each of his last four starts. As Petzold notes, Hinch doesn't plan on using a six-man rotation, so it's unlikely that Manning will stick around on a long-term basis. Rotowire.com Today, 1:19 pm
  • Cleared to return to action
Bailey (concussion) was cleared to return to action after being examined by Dr. Mickey Collins on Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Advice: Collins, who is a concussion expert, cleared Bailey for baseball activities this past Friday and has now given the go-ahead for the catcher to play in games. While the Giants have not yet made a roster move involving Bailey, it would appear imminent. The 24-year-old has played just one game since May 4 because of concussion issues. • Begins throwing off mound
May (elbow) has started throwing off a mound at the Dodgers' team facility in Arizona, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.

Advice: May has been slowly working his way back from the surgery underwent on his right flexor tendon and UCL in July. The right-hander will progressively increase his workload on the mound before he'll likely throw live batting practice and ultimately go on an extended minor-league rehab assignment. The organization will likely be especially cautious in their approach to May's recovery, and his return to the majors is currently projected to come around the All-Star break. • Andrew Benintendi goes hitless in loss to Jays
After taking a seat Sunday, Andrew Benintendi went 0-for-4 as the White Sox’s No. 5 hitter Monday against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Benintendi really set the tone for the day when he went out of the strike zone and tapped into a double play on a 1-0 pitch from Jose Berríos in the second inning. The White Sox collectively went 4-for-5 against Berríos that inning, yet they wound up with only one run. Benintendi also made a half-hearted slide attempt at a flyball in the second to give Bo Bichette a double and, later in the game, allowed Bichette to tag up and go from second to third without a throw on a 320-foot fly to left-center. At this point, Benintendi belongs on the injured list or in the minors. The White Sox will keep playing him, though. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:39 pm
  • Option for Saturday's start
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that Thompson is a candidate to start Saturday versus the Cubs, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Advice: It sounds like the decision will come down to either Thompson or Andre Pallante, although the team doesn't appear close to making that call. Thompson was sent down last month after posting a 9.53 ERA over five appearances (two starts). He's managed to put up a 1.84 ERA in 14.2 frames with Triple-A Memphis, although that's come with a 14:13 K:BB. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:36 pm

  • Yariel Rodriguez will start at Triple-A on Tuesday
Yariel Rodriguez will start for Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday as part of his rehab assignment.

Advice: With Alek Manoah pitching well in the rotation, it’s unlikely that Rodriguez will be back in the mix to start when he’s activated. However, Rodriguez profiles better as a multi-inning reliever, which is where he experienced the most success in Japan. He could provide a boost for the Blue Jays bullpen and insurance for Manoah when he comes off the IL. Bowden Francis will also make a rehab start with Buffalo later in the week and could provide further insurance in case Manoah slips up again. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:38 pm
  • Allows 10 hits Sunday
Manning allowed four runs on 10 hits and three walks over five innings Sunday against the Diamondbacks. He struck out one and did not factor into the decision.

Advice: Manning surrendered a pair of runs in the opening frame and then allowed a run in the second and fourth. He allowed at least one baserunner in every inning and managed just four whiffs on 86 pitches, leading to a season-low one strikeout. Over two starts while filling in for Kenta Maeda (illness), Manning's allowed seven runs on 19 hits while posting a 6:4 K:BB in 10.2 innings. He was unable to take advantage of the opportunity with an opening in the rotation and figures to be optioned back to Triple-A Toledo this week with Maeda set to return May 24.
