    • Ryne Nelson shuts down Dodgers over five innings
Ryne Nelson tossed five shutout innings with five strikeouts in a win over the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Advice: Brandon Hughes had recorded the first two outs of the game as the opener. Nelson came in for the final out and shut down the Dodgers over five frames, scattering five hits and three walks with five strikeouts to earn the win. The 26-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 6.03 ERA, 1.83 WHIP, and a 28/10 K/BB ratio across 34 1/3 innings. His next outing should come against the Rangers in Texas next week. • Picks up fourth win
Walker (4-2) pitched a perfect inning and struck out one, earning the extra-inning win over the Pirates on Wednesday.

Advice: Walker kept the game tied in the ninth inning, and the Giants' offense exploded in the 10th to make him the pitcher of record. The right-hander has stumbled a little recently, allowing two runs over his last five innings, but he also has a 7:0 K:BB and three holds in that span. Walker is getting the job done with a 2.42 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 36:4 K:BB over 26 innings this season. He's added seven holds and one blown save while not seeing a lot of late-inning work, but his elite strikeout numbers make him an interesting option in all NL-only formats and some deeper mixed leagues as well. • Picks up third win
Gaddis (3-1) allowed a hit and struck out three without walking a batter over 1.1 innings to earn the win over the Mets on Wednesday.

Advice: Gaddis was the beneficiary of the Guardians' comeback push Wednesday, picking up his second win in five outings. The right-hander hasn't allowed a run over 9.1 innings in May while adding a 7:1 K:BB, two wins and four holds for the month. He's thriving in a high-leverage role in his first year as a full-time reliever, posting a 1.85 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 24:4 K:BB with 11 holds and three blown saves over 24.1 innings this season. • Struggles versus Blue Jays
Nastrini (0-3) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits and six walks while failing to record a strikeout over 3.1 innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Blue Jays.

Advice: It was a second poor outing in three appearances this season for the rookie right-hander. He did fine in the first inning, but the Blue Jays struck back hard in the second and added two more runs to his line in the fourth. Nastrini has an 11.91 ERA, 2.56 WHIP and 8:13 K:BB over 11.1 innings this season. It's possible the White Sox try to let Nastrini learn on the job in the majors now that Brad Keller has elected free agency after being designated for assignment Sunday. If Nastrini gets another start, it's projected to be a rematch versus the Blue Jays in Chicago. Rotowire.com Today, 8:03 pm

    • Nick Nastrini blasted for nine runs in loss to Jays
Nick Nastrini allowed nine runs over 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Advice: The Blue Jays were all over Nastrini on Wednesday, and Chicago let the rookie right-hander go as long as they could. After a scoreless first inning, Nastrini surrendered seven runs in the second, including a two-run homer by Bo Bichette. Two walks and a base hit in the fourth brought two more runs across. Nastrini walked one more batter before he was finally relieved with one out. Another start in the rotation would come next week against the same Blue Jays in Chicago. Rotoworld Today, 7:11 pm

    • Ben Brown set to start for Cubs on Thursday
Ben Brown will start for the Cubs on Thursday against the Braves.

Advice: The Cubs needed to fill the rotation spot that was vacated when Kyle Hendricks was moved to the bullpen. The 24-year-old right-hander has pitched well in both roles for the Cubs this season, registering a 3.57 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 39/13 K/BB ratio (35 1/3 innings) over 11 appearances (four starts). Streamers beware though, he hasn’t thrown more than 42 pitches in an outing since May 2 and may not work deep enough into Thursday’s game to earn a victory. Rotoworld Today, 7:03 pm

    • Light workload in first rehab outing
Rodriguez (back) allowed an unearned run on one hit and one walk while retiring one batter in his rehab appearance for Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.

Advice: Rodriguez tossed 16 pitches in the outing, his first at any level since the Blue Jays placed him on the 15-day injured list April 30 with thoracic spine inflammation. Per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, Rodriguez is scheduled to cover two innings and toss around 30-to-35 pitches in his next rehab appearance later this week, which could be his last before he makes his return from the IL. • Shines in rehab start
Smyly (hip) struck out five over three perfect innings in his rehab start Tuesday with High-A South Bend.

Advice: Pitching in a game for the first time in a month after landing on the 15-day injured list April 23 with a right hip impingement, Smyly looked about as good as possible while tossing 40 pitches. The lefty had been working exclusively as a reliever prior to landing on the shelf, but with the Cubs moving the struggling Kyle Hendricks to the bullpen earlier this week, Smyly could be under consideration to step in as the team's No. 5 starter if he makes it back from the IL before Jordan Wicks (forearm). If the Cubs intend to bring Smyly back in a starting role, he'll still need to get stretched out a bit further, so it wouldn't be surprising if he stuck around at South Bend or joined a higher-level affiliate for another rehab outing. Regardless of whether Smyly serves as a starter or reliever upon his return to the Cubs, manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that he expects the 34-year-old to be activated at some point next week, per MLB.com. • Elects free agency
Keller cleared waivers Wednesday and elected to become a free agent, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Advice: Keller was DFA'd by the White Sox on Sunday after posting a 4.86 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 16.2 innings, and he'll now try his luck in the open market rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Charlotte. The 28-year-old righty has not found much consistent success throughout his past few seasons in the majors, but he should have no problem securing at least a minor-league deal with another team in need of rotation depth.
